O'Byrne Cup
The O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic football competition organized by the Leinster GAA and first staged in 1954. History The competition is named in honour of Matt Byrne (b. 14 February 1870), a former Wicklow GAA club and county officer. By virtue of a quirk in translation, the Corn Uí Bhroin became known as the O'Byrne cup even though Matt had never used an 'O' in his surname. Byrne was a native of Baltinglass and taught at the local national school. Deeply involved in GAA activities at all levels throughout his life, he was regarded as a good footballer in his youth and an excellent handballer. He was the first secretary of the Maurice Davins' club in Baltinglass and served as a member of the Wicklow County Board for over 50 years, mostly as registrar. He represented Wicklow on Leinster and Central Councils and served as President of the Irish Handball Council from 1941-44. Byrne died on 21 September 1947. The 1999 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football competition played by the county teams of Leinster GAA. The tournament was a straight knockout, with 10 teams. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). 1970 O'Byrne Cup
The 1970 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football tournament contested by the county teams of Leinster GAA. It was the first staging of the O'Byrne Cup competition. Kildare won the delayed tournament after defeating Louth in the final, played at the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda on 12 March 1972. Format The tournament was contested on a knockout basis. 2022 O'Byrne Cup
The 2022 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football tournament played by eleven county teams of Leinster GAA in January 2022; Kilkenny did not take part. Longford were the holders. A new rule limits the number of substitutions a team can make; players taken off cannot return, capping the number of changes at 11. were the winners. The 2017 O'Byrne Cup was played by county and further education college teams of Leinster GAA in January 2017 and was won by Dublin. Format 16 teams compete: 11 county teams (all those of Leinster except Kilkenny) and 5 third-level teams (DIT, UCD, IT Carlow, DCU–Dóchas Éireann and Maynooth University). The teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each. Each team plays the other teams in their group once, earning 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The four group winners compete in the semi-finals. The 2007 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football competition played by the teams of Leinster GAA. The competition differs from the Leinster Senior Football Championship as it also features further education colleges. O'Byrne Cup First round The first round saw the withdrawal of Kilkenny who were then replaced by Dundalk IT. Dundalk IT later dropped out of the competition which means that Wexford go on to play in the quarter-final on January 4, 2007. The first match of the O'Byrne Cup was played between Carlow and Wicklow. It was a much anticipated game as it was the debut of the new Wicklow senior football manager Mick O'Dwyer. Wexford, Wicklow, DIT, Offaly, Laois, Louth, Westmeath and Dublin went on to play in the quarter-finals of the O'Byrne Cup.
