Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn (Welsh: ''Y Drenewydd a Llanllwchaearn'') is a local government community in mid Powys, Wales. It includes the town of Newtown and the small neighbouring village of Llanllwchaiarn. At the time of the 2011 census the population of the community was 11,357. The community council is called Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, often abbreviated to Newtown Town Council. History The community has its origins in the Newtown Local Government District, which was established on 25 July 1866. The district was governed by a local board, and from the outset its territory covered parts of the two parishes of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn. By 1871 the district had become known as the Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn district. Under the Local Government Act 1894 such local government districts were reconstituted as urban districts with effect from 31 December 1894. The ''South Wales Argus'' is a daily tabloid newspaper published in Newport, South Wales. ''The Argus'' is distributed in Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, and Torfaen. Robert Owen
Robert Owen (; 14 May 1771 – 17 November 1858) was a Welsh textile manufacturer, philanthropist and social reformer, and a founder of utopian socialism and the cooperative movement. He strove to improve factory working conditions, promoted experimental socialistic communities, and sought a more collective approach to child rearing, including government control of education. He gained wealth in the early 1800s from a textile mill at New Lanark, Scotland. Having trained as a draper in Stamford, Lincolnshire he worked in London before relocating aged 18 to Manchester and textile manufacturing. In 1824, he moved to America and put most of his fortune in an experimental socialistic community at New Harmony, Indiana, as a preliminary for his Utopian society. It lasted about two years. The ''Shropshire Star'' is reputedly the twelfth biggest-selling regional newspaper in the UK. Newtown Central was the name of a county electoral ward in the town of Newtown, Powys, Wales. It remains as a community ward to Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council. Description Newtown West covers the largely rural northwest quadrant of the community north of the River Severn. It includes part of the Pengloddfa district of Newtown.
