El Dorado, founded by Matthew Rainey, is a city in, and the county seat of, Union County, on the southern border of Arkansas, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 18,884. El Dorado is headquarters of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission as well as Murphy USA, Deltic Timber Corporation and a DelekUS oil refinery. Norphlet is a city in Union County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2010 census the population stood at 844. History Norphlet was called Jesse in the 1880s. The Post Office was created in 1891. The town originally centered around William G. Miles's Sawmill. The town was named for Nauphlet Goodwin. The name of the town was misspelled by the Postal Department when the Post Office was created. The word, Nauphlet, was written in long hand and looked like Norphlet to the people in the Postal Department. So, the papers for the post office were issued for Norphlet. Oil was discovered at Norphlet in 1922. The formation in which the oil was discovered led to 'Norphlet' becoming a geological term - a Norphlet Formation is a Jurassic Sandstone Formation. Arkansas Highway 172 (AR 172, Ark. 172, and Hwy. 172) is a designation for a state highway in Southern Arkansas. The first section begins at US Route 82 (US 82) in Cairo and ends at AR 7 in Smackover. The second section begins at US 167 near Artesian and ends at AR 160 just west of Jersey. The third, and longest, section begins at US 278 east of Warren and ends at US 425 south of Monticello. All three routes are very rural. Smackover, Arkansas
Smackover is a small city in northern Union County, Arkansas, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population was at 1,865. It had a large oil boom in the 1920s, with production continuing for some time. History In 1686, the French settlers called this area ''"Sumac Couvert"'', which translates to "covered in sumac bushes". This was transliterated, that is, phonetically Anglicized by the English-speaking settlers of the 19th century and later to the name "Smackover." The name Bayou de Chemin Couvert (Smackover Creek) first appeared in an April 5, 1789, letter written by the commandant of Fort Miro (Monroe, Louisiana) to the French territorial governor. Oil was discovered in this area in 1922; it attracted national attention, speculators, and an economic boom. Smackover was incorporated in 1923.
