NBL (Australia) Rookie Of The Year
The National Basketball League Rookie of the Year is an annual National Basketball League (NBL) award given since the 1983 NBL season to the top rookie A rookie is a person new to an occupation, profession, or hobby. In sports, a ''rookie'' is a professional athlete in their first season (or year). In contrast with a veteran who has experience and expertise, a rookie is usually inexperienced ... of the regular season. For a player to be considered for Rookie of the Year, they must be an unrestricted player who has never previously played professionally in the NBL or any other league (excluding in New Zealand). At the season's end, each club nominates one player for the award with the head coach, one assistant coach and the team captain then voting in a 3-2-1 format (3 votes being indicative of the most deserving). Illawarra Hawks
The Illawarra Hawks (formerly the Wollongong Hawks and The Hawks) is an Australian professional basketball team based in Wollongong, New South Wales. The Illawarra Hawks compete in the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL) and play their home games at WIN Entertainment Centre, known colloquially as "The Sandpit". Perth Wildcats
The Perth Wildcats are an Australian professional basketball team based in Perth, Western Australia. The Wildcats compete in the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL) and play their home games at Perth Arena, RAC Arena, known colloquially as "The Jungle". After three years of strong lobbying to the NBL, the creation of a national basketball team in Perth finally occurred in 1982. The Westate Wildcats were established and played out of the 800-seat Perry Lakes Basketball Stadium. Interest in basketball steadily grew throughout the community and in 1984 the Westate Wildcats became the Perth Wildcats. Andrew Vlahov
Andrew Mitchell Vlahov (born 1 April 1969) is an Australian retired professional basketball player. He played his entire eleven-year professional career for the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL), with whom he won three championships in 1991, 1995 and 2000. Early life Vlahov was born in Perth to Eva (née Kampe) and Len Vlahov. His mother had arrived in Australia as a post-war refugee from Latvia, while his father was the son of Croatian immigrants. Both his parents were athletes, and represented Australia at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games which were held in Perth. Eva was a WA State Long jump champion while Len held the WA State Discus record for 20 consecutive years. The 1991 NBL season was the 13th season of competition since its establishment in 1979. A total of 14 teams contested the league. Clubs Regular season The 1991 regular season took place over 24 rounds between 6 April 1991 and 22 September 1991. 1991 saw Melbourne Tigers superstar Andrew Gaze became the first player to score 1,000 points in an NBL regular season. He scored 1,007 points in 26 games at 38.7 points per game. Hobart Tassie Devils
The Hobart Devils are a defunct professional basketball team that competed in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). Based in Hobart, Tasmania, the team was the only representative from the state of Tasmania for the majority of its tenure, but was one of three teams (the Geelong Supercats and the Gold Coast Rollers being the other two) that had their NBL licenses revoked by the league directors in 1996 due to financial difficulties. While not the first time teams had pulled out of the league, the sudden departure of the Devils, Supercats and Rollers signified that the NBL's successful era (between the late 1980s and early 1990s) was truly over.
