North Dakota Fighting Hawks Men's Ice Hockey
The North Dakota Fighting Hawks men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team of the University of North Dakota. They are members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I ice hockey. North Dakota is widely regarded as a premier college hockey school and has one of the most storied programs in NCAA history. UND has made over 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, appeared in the Frozen Four 22 times, and has won 8 NCAA Division I Championships. The program has also achieved 15 WCHA Regular Season Championships, 6 NCHC Regular Season Championships, and 12 Conference Tournament Championships. The school's former nickname was the Fighting Sioux, which held a lengthy and controversial tenure before being retired in 2012 due to pressure from the NCAA. North Dakota Fighting Hawks
The North Dakota Fighting Hawks (formerly known as the Flickertails and the Fighting Sioux) are the athletic teams that represent the University of North Dakota (UND), located in the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level as a member of the Summit League. With 17 varsity teams, North Dakota is best known for its Ice Hockey team and American Football team. North Dakota's main rivalries are with the North Dakota State Bison and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Originally in the Division II North Central Conference, UND began transitioning to NCAA's Division I in 2008 with the football program participating in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). 1967 NCAA University Division Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1967 NCAA Men's University Division Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1966–67 NCAA University Division men's ice hockey season, the 20th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 16 and 18, 1967, and concluded with Cornell defeating Boston University 4–1. All games were played at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, New York. This was the first championship for an eastern team since 1954 and the first time since 1949 that both finalists were from the east. Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The ECAC tournament champion and the two WCHA tournament co-champions received automatic bids into the tournament. The 1963 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1962–63 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 16th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 14 and 16, 1963, and concluded with North Dakota defeating Denver 6–5. All games were played at the McHugh Forum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The ECAC tournament champion and the WCHA tournament champion received automatic bids into the tournament. Harvard, the ECAC champion, declined the bid to the tournament and was instead replaced by the runner-up Boston College. Two at-large bids were offered to one eastern and one western team based upon both their tournament finish as well as their regular season record. The 1959 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1958–59 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 12th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 12 and 14, 1959, and concluded with North Dakota defeating Michigan State 4-3 in overtime. All games were played at the RPI Field House in Troy, New York. As of 2024, this was the last tournament to be won by an independent school. Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The Big Ten and Tri-State League champions received bids into the tournament as did two independent schools. Format The Tri-State League champion was seeded as the top eastern team while the Big Ten champion was given the top western seed.
