North Carolina's 8th congressional district is a congressional district that comprises a large portion of the southern Piedmont area of North Carolina The district includes all of Anson, Montgomery, Richmond, Scotland, Stanly, and Union counties as well as portions of Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Robeson counties. The district is currently represented by Mark Harris, a member of the Republican Party. Candidate filing began February 24, 2022, after the North Carolina Supreme Court approved a new map only used for the 2022 United States House of Representatives elections which then changed the 8th district boundaries to include Anson, Davidson, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly and Union Counties and parts of Cabarrus and Richmond counties. After the North Carolina General Assembly approved a new congressional map, the district's Cook Partisan Voting Index shifted from R+20 to R+10. Davidson County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 168,930. Its county seat is Lexington, and its largest community is Thomasville. Midland is a town in southern Cabarrus County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Located in the Charlotte region of North Carolina, Midland is a 30-minute commute to uptown Charlotte. The name of the town is derived from its location approximately halfway between Charlotte and Oakboro on the railroad line. The population was 4,684 as of the 2020 census, up from 3,073 in 2010. Locust is a small rural city in Stanly and Cabarrus counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 2,930 at the 2010 census. It has seen substantial growth lately due to the urban sprawl from the Charlotte area. Geography Locust is located in southwestern Stanly County. Through annexations, the city limits now extend west into Cabarrus County. Locust is bordered by the town of Stanfield to the south. The Cook Partisan Voting Index, abbreviated PVI or CPVI, is a measurement of how partisan a U.S. congressional district or U.S. state is. This partisanship is indicated as lean towards either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party, compared to the nation as a whole, based on how that district or state voted in the previous two presidential elections. History The Partisan Voting Index was developed in 1997 by Charlie Cook of ''The Cook Political Report'', in conjunction with Clark Bensen and his political statistical analysis firm, Polidata, "as a means of providing a more accurate picture of the competitiveness".
