Nicholas Fitzsimon
Nicholas Fitzsimon (1807 – 31 July 1849) was an Irish politician. Born at Broughall Castle, Fitzsimon attended Trinity College Dublin. He lived at Castlewood in County Offaly, and worked as a distiller. He became a captain in the County Monaghan militia. Fitzsimon stood at the 1832 UK general election in King's County and was elected for the Repeal Association. He held the seat at the 1835 and 1837 UK general elections, but resigned in 1840 by taking the Chiltern Hundreds The Chiltern Hundreds is an ancient administrative area in Buckinghamshire, England, composed of three " hundreds" and lying partially within the Chiltern Hills. John Westenra
John Craven Westenra (31 March 1798 – 5 December 1874) was an Irish Whig politician and army officer. Born in Walsh Park, County Tipperary, Ireland, he was the son of Warner Westenra, 2nd Baron Rossmore and Mary Ann Walsh, and the brother of Henry Westenra, 3rd Baron Rossmore. He first married Eleanor Mary East née Jolliffe, daughter of William Jolliffe, in 1834. After she died in 1838, he then married Ann Daubuz, daughter of Lewis Charles Daubuz, in 1842, and they had at least one /child: Mary Anne Wilmot Westenra (died 1894). An army officer, he at sometime achieved the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Fusilier Guards. Westenra was first elected Whig MP for at the 1835 general election and held the seat until 1852, when he did not seek re-election. Sir Andrew Armstrong, 1st Baronet DL (19 October 178627 January 1863) was an Irish baronet and politician. Early life Born at Gallen Priory in County Offaly, he was the son of Edmund Armstrong and his wife Elizabeth, third daughter of Frederick Trench and sister of Frederick Trench, 1st Baron Ashtown. Career as politician He served as captain in the King's County Militia. and was appointed High Sheriff of King's County in 1811, and again in 1836, and served as deputy lieutenant of that county. He became Receiver General of Stamps in Ireland in 1831, an office he held until its abolition in 1841, when he was created a baronet, of Gallen Priory, in King's County as compensation. In February of the same year, he entered the British House of Commons in a by-election, sitting for King's County until 1852. The 1832 United Kingdom general election, the first after the Reform Act, saw the Whigs win a large majority, with the Tories winning less than 30% of the vote. Political situation The Earl Grey had been Prime Minister since November 1830. He headed the first predominantly Whig administration since the Ministry of All the Talents in 1806–07. In addition to the Whigs themselves, Grey was supported by Radical and other allied politicians. The Whigs and their allies were gradually coming to be referred to as liberals, but no formal Liberal Party had been established at the time of this election, so all the politicians supporting the ministry are referred to as Whig in the above results.
