The New Zealand men's national ice hockey team is the national ice hockey team for New Zealand. As of 2024, the New Zealand team is ranked 41st in the IIHF World Rankings. The official nickname of New Zealand's national ice hockey team is the Ice Blacks. The "Ice Blacks" nickname is one of many national team nicknames related to the All Blacks. History The 2016 documentary film "Ice Blacks" covers the history of the team, their rivalry with Australia and their difficulties in competing at international level because of New Zealand's geographic distance from the rest of the traditional ice hockey playing countries. Gold Medal
A gold medal is a medal awarded for highest achievement in a non-military field. Its name derives from the use of at least a fraction of gold in form of plating or alloying in its manufacture. 1995 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1995 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships was the 59th such event sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Teams representing 39 countries participated in several levels of competition. The competition also served as qualifications for group placements in the 1996 competition. The top Championship Group tournament took place in Sweden from 23 April to 7 May 1995, with games played in Stockholm and Gävle. In the tournament final, Finland won the gold medal by defeating Sweden 4–1 at the Globen arena in Stockholm. The Finnish goals were scored by Timo Jutila and Ville Peltonen, who scored a hat trick. The gold medal was the first in Finland's history. Sweden had written a fight song, " Den glider in", which also was intended to be the official song of the championships. 1989 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1989 Ice Hockey World Championships took place in Sweden from 15 April – 1 May. The games were played in Södertälje and Stockholm, in the newly built arena Globen. Eight teams took part, and each team played each other once. The four best teams then played each other again. This was the 53rd World Championships, and also the 64th European Championships. The Soviet Union became world champions for the 21st time, and also European champions for the 26th time. The tournament was marred by positive drug tests. Only the goal totals of the Americans were affected in the end. Their losses against the Czechoslovaks and the Canadians were ruled as shutouts because of Corey Millen's high testosterone levels. 2009 New Zealand Winter Games
The 2009 New Zealand Winter Games was a multi-sport event that was held in the Otago region of New Zealand. It was the inaugural New Zealand Winter Games and was organised by the Winter Games New Zealand Trust. Approximately 816 athletes from 41 nations participated in 51 event in seven disciplines. Canada won the Team Trophy through points accumulated through the medals won during the games. The United States finished second and Japan third. The hosts, New Zealand finished in sixth place. 2025 IIHF World Championship Division II
The 2025 IIHF World Championship Division II consisted of two international ice hockey tournaments organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Divisions II A and II B represented the fourth and the fifth tier of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. Group A was scheduled to be held in Melbourne, Australia, but it was later moved to Serbia. Netherlands won Group A and got promoted to Division I, while Israel was relegated.
