The 2009 New Jersey gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 2009. Incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democratic governor Jon Corzine ran for a second term against Republican Party (United States), Republican Chris Christie, Independent Christopher Daggett, and nine others, in addition to several 2009 New Jersey gubernatorial election#Write-in candidates, write-in candidates. Christie won the election, with about 48.5 percent of the vote, to 44.9 percent for Corzine and 5.8 percent for Daggett. He assumed office on January 19, 2010. This was the first election to fill the newly created office of Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey, lieutenant governor, with the candidates for governor choosing their running mates. 1969 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election
The 1969 New Jersey gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 1969. Republican nominee William T. Cahill defeated Democratic nominee Robert B. Meyner with 59.66% of the vote. This was the only gubernatorial election that Republicans won between 1949 and 1981. Primary elections were held on June 3. Turnout in the primary was approximately 24 percent of the registered voter population. Cahill won the Republican nomination narrowly over fellow South Jersey Congressman Charles W. Sandman Jr., while Meyner finished with nearly twice the vote of his closest competitor, state senator William F. Kelly of Hudson County. The 1913 New Jersey gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 1913. Democratic acting Governor James Fairman Fielder, who resigned a week before the election so that he could succeed himself, defeated Republican former Governor Edward C. Stokes and Progressive former state senator Everett Colby. The state's first-ever direct primary elections for governor were held on September 23, though the contests were largely uneventful. For the Democratic nomination, Fielder defeated former Trenton mayor Frank S. Katzenbach, making his third run for governor.
