Neuberg an der Mürz is a municipality in the district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in the Austrian state of Styria. Geography Neuberg lies in the upper valley of the Mürz at the foot of the Schneealpe northwest of Mürzzuschlag. History Otto, Duke of Austria founded Neuberg Abbey in 1327. The Treaty of Neuberg was signed there in 1379. The abbey was the center of settlement in the Mürz Valley. The abbey was suppressed in 1786 by Emperor Joseph II, and its church became the parish church of Neuberg. Following the suppression of the abbey, iron mining began, eventually becoming the dominant industry in the area. The Vienna Woods (, ) are forested highlands that form the northeastern foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps in the states of Lower Austria and Vienna. The Treaty of Neuberg, concluded between the Austrian duke Albert III and his brother Leopold III at Neuberg Abbey on 25 September 1379, determined the division of the Habsburg hereditary lands into the Albertinian line and the Leopoldian line. Neuberg Abbey
Neuberg Abbey () is a former Cistercian monastery in Neuberg an der Mürz in Styria, Austria, and is one of the few extant set of monastic buildings in Austria to have retained its medieval character to any great extent. History The abbey was founded in 1327 as a filial monastery of Stift Heiligenkreuz by the Habsburg Duke Otto the Merry, who died here in 1339. Its foundation was to celebrate the birth of Otto's son, Frederick. Upon its founding, it had twelve monks, including the Abbot, Friedrich. Mürzzuschlag () is a town in northeastern Styria, Austria, the capital of the former Mürzzuschlag District.
