''Nena'' is the first album by German pop rock band Nena (band), Nena and the second studio album of its singer, Nena, Gabriele "Nena" Kerner. Released on 14 January 1983, it is part of the music genre called Neue Deutsche Welle (meaning "New German Wave") in German music. The album was a great success in West Germany and the second single "99 Luftballons" reached in the music charts worldwide including Australia, Austria, Canada, the Irish Singles Chart, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK singles chart, United Kingdom Singles Chart. The single is considered a "one-hit wonder" by many in the US, despite the fact that the band's other singles repeatedly topped European charts. Nena was a West German Neue Deutsche Welle band formed in West Berlin in 1981. In 1983 and 1984, their German-language song "" (and its English version, "99 Red Balloons") reached number one in the singles charts of countries around the world. History Formation and rise The band was formed in 1981 when vocalist Gabriele Kerner (Nena) came to West Berlin with drummer Rolf Brendel, her boyfriend at the time. There they assembled the other members of the band, which took its name from their lead singer's nickname (Spanish for "little girl"), which she had acquired as a toddler during a family holiday to Catalonia, Spain. The band wrote all of their songs themselves, typically working in pairs. One-hit Wonder
A one-hit wonder is any entity that achieves mainstream popularity, often for only one piece of work, and becomes known among the general public solely for that momentary success. The term is most commonly used in regard to music performers with only one hit single that overshadows their other work. Some artists dubbed "one-hit wonders" in a particular country had achieved success in other countries. Music artists with subsequent popular albums and hit listings are not properly considered a one-hit wonder, although artists with multiple hits have sometimes been erroneously labelled as "one-hit wonders" if one particular hit has become much more well-remembered years or decades later than their other hits. ''Chokmah'' (Hebrew: חכמה for "wisdom", also transliterated as ''chokma'', ''chokhmah'' or ''hokhmah'') is a studio album of German pop singer Nena, released in 2001. It received mixed reviews, the majority being positive. It spawned one successful single, "Carpe diem", and foreshadowed the comeback Nena achieved with her next album, '' Nena feat. Nena''. Background During the 1990s Nena had released four rock and pop studio albums which had failed to bring her anything approaching the commercial success she had enjoyed in the 1980s. Gabriele Susanne Kerner (born 24 March 1960), better known by her stage name Nena, is a German singer who rose to international fame in 1983 as the lead vocalist of the band Nena with the Neue Deutsche Welle song "99 Luftballons". In that same year, the band re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena's re-recording of some of the band's old hit songs as a solo artist, produced by the co-composer of most of them, her former Nena band colleague and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, rekindled her solo career in 2002. ''Der Musikladen'' () was a West German music television programme that ran from 13 December 1972 to 29 November 1984. The show continued the 1960s ''Beat-Club'' under a new name, and in turn was replaced by ''Extratour''. History Around 90 episodes were aired, plus 59 as ''Musikladen extra'' with most being made in the period between 1974 and 1979. All episodes were produced by Radio Bremen and directed by Michael Leckebusch. A normal episode of ''Musikladen'' usually featured several live performances by guest musicians, and ran around 45 minutes. Some episodes were longer, and a few were shorter. The LP (from long playing or long play) is an analog sound storage medium, specifically a phonograph record format characterized by: a speed of rpm; a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter; use of the "microgroove" groove specification; and a vinyl (a copolymer of vinyl chloride acetate) composition disk.
