Bangladesh Nationalist Party
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (), popularly abbreviated as BNP (), is a major List of political parties in Bangladesh, political party in Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by President of Bangladesh, President Ziaur Rahman, with a view of uniting people with a Bangladeshi nationalism, nationalist ideology. Later, the BNP emerged as one of the two traditionally dominant parties in Bangladesh, along with it's rival, the Awami League. Known as the "Party of the Freedom Fighters of the Battlefield" during it's establishment, the BNP was founded by Ziaur Rahman after the presidential election of 1978 and remained in its leadership until his Assassination of Ziaur Rahman, assassination in 1981. The Bangladesh Jatiya Party (), simply known as BJP, is a centre-right conservative political party in Bangladesh. It is a splinter group of the original Jatiya Party, founded by the former President Hossain Mohammad Ershad. It was previously known as Jatiya Party (Naziur), after the late party chairman Naziur Rahman Manzur. Manzur was a Mukti Bahini member in the Bangladesh War of Independence of 1971 and served as the Local Government and Rural Development Minister and Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation under Ershad's regime. Manzur also served as the secretary general of the Jatiya Party between 1998 and 2001. After developing policy differences with Jatiya Party chairman Ershad in early 2001, Manzur formed the Bangladesh Jatiya Party – BJP on 5 August 2001 and maintained the 4-Party Alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The Jatiya Sangsad (), often simply referred to as Sangsad and also known as is the unicameral Legislature, legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament (Bangladesh), members of Parliament, or MPs. The 2024 Bangladeshi general election, 12th national parliamentary election was held on 7 January 2024.
