National Women's History Project
The National Women's History Alliance (NWHA) is an American non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and preserving women's history. The NWHA was formerly known as the National Women's History Project. Based out of Santa Rosa, California, since 1980, it was started by women's history activists Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett and Bette Morgan. The National Women's History Alliance started by leading a coalition that successfully lobbied Congress to designate March as Women's History Month, now celebrated across the country. Today, the National Women's History Alliance is known nationally as the only clearinghouse providing information and training in multicultural women’s history for educators, community organizations, and parents-for anyone wanting to expand their understanding of the historic contributions of women. Mary Ruthsdotter
Mary Ruthsdotter (October 14, 1944 – January 8, 2010) was a feminist activist who co-founded the National Women's History Project, for which she produced curriculum guides, teacher training programs and videos on women’s history. She played an influential role in obtaining Congressional resolutions and Presidential proclamations designating Women's History Week and, later, Women's History Month. Early life and education Born Mary Pegau in 1944 in Fairfield, Iowa, Ruthsdotter lived many places in her youth as her father, a U.S. Marine Corps pilot, was assigned to bases in Arizona, California, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Taiwan. Settling in Los Angeles, she married Dave Crawford in 1964, taking his last name. She attended UCLA in the 1970s, earning a BA in urban geography. Molly Murphy MacGregor
Molly Murphy MacGregor is one of the co-founders of the National Women's History Project, now known as the National Women's History Alliance. Her work contributed to the creation of Women's History Month, which is recognized every year in March. Co-founding the National Women's History Project Under MacGregor and other co-founders leadership, in 1978 the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women organized a week long celebration for women’s history. MacGregor co-founded the National Women's History Project in 1980 with several other women including Mary Ruthsdotter in order to promote awareness about women's history throughout the United States. Martha Wheelock
Martha Wheelock is a longtime educator and a filmmaker. She has been involved with the women's movement as far back as 1970. Film career Wheelock is notable for her films featuring lesser known women in history. She founded Wild West Women Films in 1976. She co-founded this organization with Kay Weaver. In 1996 she made a film about the suffrage movement titled Votes for Women which marked the 75th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Wheelock wrote, directed and produced a film on suffragist Inez Milholland titled Forward Into Light. LGBT activism Wheelock marched in Christopher street protests in the 1970s. In 1974 she was photographed holding up a sign at a protest that stated "Mother Nature is a Lesbian." Jessie Bernard
Jessie Shirley Bernard (born Jessie Sarah Ravitch, 1903 – 1996) was an American sociologist and noted feminist scholar. She was a persistent forerunner of feminist thought in American sociology and her life's work is characterized as extraordinarily productive spanning several intellectual and political eras. Bernard studied and wrote about women's lives since the late 1930s and her contributions to social sciences and feminist theory regarding women, sex, marriage, and the interaction with the family and community are well noted.
