National University Of Rwanda
The National University of Rwanda (NUR; , , UNR) was the largest university in Rwanda. It was located at in the city of Butare and was established in 1963 by the government in cooperation with the Congregation of the Dominicans from the Province of Quebec, Canada. Its founder and first rector was Father Georges-Henri Lévesque. When it was established, the NUR had three divisions (Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences, and a Teacher Training College), 51 students and 16 lecturers. The university suffered badly during the genocide and had to close in 1994, reopening in April 1995. At that time English was introduced as a medium of instruction alongside French. University of Rwanda (, ) is a public Collegiate university, collegiate, multi campus university based in Kigali, Rwanda. Formed in 2013 through the merger of previously independent education institutions, the University of Rwanda is the largest education institution in Rwanda. The University of Rwanda is ranked number one in the country by the Higher Education Council, an organ established by the Government of Rwanda. Today the University of Rwanda is composed of six independent and self-governing colleges operating on eight campuses. Pasteur Bizimungu
Pasteur Bizimungu (born April 1950) is a Rwandan politician who served as the third President of Rwanda, holding office from 19 July 1994 until 23 March 2000. Bizimungu had previously held several positions under President Juvenal Habyarimana throughout the 1980s. He joined the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rebel group against Habyarimana in 1990 following the death of his brother seemingly under the orders of Habyarimana's government. After the RPF's victory in the Rwandan Civil War in 1994 which ended the Rwandan genocide, Bizimungu became the new president of the country with RPF commander Paul Kagame as vice-president and minister of defense, who was seen as the country's ''de facto'' leader throughout his presidency. Jeannette Bayisenge
Jeannette Bayisenge is a Rwandan socialist politician and the current Minister of Public Service and Labour in Rwanda. She was appointed to the role by President Paul Kagame on 22 August 2023. She has also served as Minister of Gender and Family Promotion in Rwanda (MIGEPROF) since 2020, and as Associate Professor of gender studies at the University of Rwanda. Pauline Nyiramasuhuko
Pauline Nyiramasuhuko (born 1 April 1946) is a Rwandan politician who was the Minister for Family Welfare and the Advancement of Women. She was convicted of having incited troops and militia to carry out rape during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. She was tried for genocide and incitement to rape as part of the "Butare Group" at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania. In June 2011, she was convicted of seven charges and sentenced to life imprisonment. Nyiramasuhuko is the first woman to be convicted of genocide by the ICTR, and the first woman to be convicted of genocidal rape. Alice Rwema
Alice Rwema is a lawyer and civil servant in Rwanda who, since August 2014, has been the vice chairperson of the board of directors at Rwanda Energy Group (REG), a parastatal company responsible for energy generation, procurement, distribution and export. Since May 2017, she has also been the company secretary of REG. Koulsy Lamko
Koulsy Lamko (born 1959) is a Chadian-born playwright, poet, novelist and university lecturer. Born in Dadouar, Lamko left his country for Burkina Faso in 1979 due to the beginning of the civil war. There, he became acquainted with Thomas Sankara and involved with the Institute of Black Peoples in Ouagadougou. Lamko spent ten years promoting community theater in Burkina Faso through the Theater of the Community and helped found the International Festival of Theatre for Development. Some of his poetry was published in '' Revue Noire'' in 1994. In 1997 he co-released the album ''Bir Ki Mbo'' of mixed poetry and music in tribute to Sankara in collaboration with Stéphane Scott and Rémi Stengel. Rose Mukantabana
Rose Mukantabana (born 31 August 1961) is a lawyer and women's rights activist. She is the former President of the Chamber of Deputies of Rwanda and was the first woman elected to the post. She was elected to serve as chair of the African Parliamentary Union from 2013-2015. Biography Rose Mukantabana was born 31 August 1961 in Nyanza District, Southern Province, Rwanda. Vincent Biruta (born July 19, 1958) is a Rwandan physician and politician who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from November 2019 to June 2024. Louise Mushikiwabo (born May 22, 1961) is the fourth and current Secretary General of the ''Organisation internationale de la Francophonie''. Alexandre Lyambabaje is a Rwandan mathematician, academician and politician. From February 2021 to May 2022, Prof. Lyambabaje served as vice-chancellor of the University of Rwanda. Prior to becoming vice chancellor, Prof. Lyambabaje was the secretary of Inter University Council of East Africa. Prof. Lyambabaje has also held various governmental positions, including minister of commerce and tourism, and serving as the permanent secretary to the minister of education. Pierre-Damien Habumuremyi (born 20 February 1961) is a Rwandan politician who served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 7 October 2011 until 24 July 2014.
