The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) is a trade union in South Africa. With a membership of 276,000 it is the largest public sector union in the country. It organizes State, Health, Education and Welfare workers. History The union was founded in 1987, when the Health and Allied Workers' Union merged with the General and Allied Workers' Union and the South African Allied Workers' Union. Mzwandile Makwayiba
Michael Mzwandile Makwayiba is a South African trade unionist. Born in Ntlangaza, in the Eastern Cape, Makwayiba began working on an apple farm in Grabouw. In 1990, he moved to work as a cleaner at the Green Point-Somerset Hospital. There, he joined the Health Workers' Union. He soon became one of the union's most prominent activists, and was elected as its deputy president in 1992. In 1993, the union decided to merge into the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU), and Makwayiba became deputy chair of its Western Cape region, and chair of its Cape Town branch. Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya
Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya is a South African politician and former trade unionist who was the inaugural Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities from May 2009 to October 2010. Before that, she was the first woman president of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union from 2004 to 2009. A nurse by profession, Mayende-Sibiya joined Nehawu in Natal in 1988. Vusi Herbert Nhlapo (born 20 September 1956) is a South African politician and former trade unionist. He was the president of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union from 1993 to 2004. Bheki Mkhize
Bhekokwakhe Robert Mkhize (18 August 1952 – 30 July 2000) was a South African politician and trade unionist who was the founding president of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union from 1987 to 1992. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1995 until his death in 2000. Mkhize was shot dead in July 2000 during a police raid on his home at Mhlabatini, KwaZulu-Natal. The police officer who shot him claimed that he had acted in self-defence after a scuffle broke out while the South African Police Service attempted to search Mkhize's property for unlicensed weapons. Fikile Zachariah "Slovo" Majola (born 1963 or 1964) is a South African politician and former trade unionist who served as the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry from May 2019 to June 2024. Phillip David Dexter (born 1 December 1962) is a South African politician, activist, and entrepreneur. Dexter was a senior researcher in the Social Cohesion and Integration Research Programme of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Before joining the HSRC, he was an executive director of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac). Dexter holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Religious Studies, a BA in Philosophy and Politics, and a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cape Town.
