Nassau is a village located in the Town of Nassau in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 1,133 at the 2010 census. The Village of Nassau is in the southern part of the county in the Town of Nassau, with a small western portion in the Town of Schodack. Nassau is bordered on the west by the Valatie Kill and Schodack township and is 15 miles east of Albany, New York state's capital city. History The village is near the site of the first settlement of the town, which took place ''circa'' 1760. The community was first known as "Union Village." The village was originally incorporated in the 19th Century as "Schermerhorn's Village," receiving charters in 1819 and 1866, but abandoned that village status until it more recently gained incorporation as Nassau Village. Nassau is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 4,789 at the 2010 census. The Town of Nassau is at the southern border of the county. History The region was first settled around 1760. The town was originally formed as the "Town of Philipstown" in 1806 from parts of the Towns of Petersburgh, Schodack, and Stephentown. The town changed its name to "Nassau" in 1808. The Henry Tunis Smith Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.2 square miles (117.1 km2), of which 44.5 square miles (115.4 km2) is land and 0.7 square mile (1.7 km2) (1.46%) is water. Long Island is a densely populated island in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of New York, part of the New York metropolitan area. With over 8 million people, Long Island is the most populous island in the United States and the 18th-most populous in the world. The island begins at New York Harbor approximately east of Manhattan Island and extends eastward about into the Atlantic Ocean and 23 miles wide at its most distant points.
