Nard (game)
Nard (, also narde or nardshir; from ''nēw-ardaxšīr'') is a historical Persian tables game for two players that is sometimes considered ancestral to backgammon. It is still played today, albeit in a different form. As in other tables games, the playing pieces are moved around a board according to rolls of dice. It uses a standard tables board, but has a different opening layout and rules of play from that of backgammon. History The game has been historically popular in Persia, Muslim world, Muslim countries, and among Babylonian Jews. A common legend associates the game with the founder of the Sassanian Dynasty, Ardashir I, Ardashir. Indeed, the Persian name is a shortening of the older name , from Middle Persian ''nēw-ardaxšīr'' "brave Ardashir". The oldest known reference to the game is thought to be a passage in the Talmud, although some claim it refers to the Greece, Greek game Kubeia. Another early reference is to be found in the Middle Persian romance ''Chatrang- ...

Nard (plant)
''Nardostachys'' is a genus of flowering plant in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). ''Nardostachys jatamansi'' is the sole species in genus. It is a perennial that grows in the Himalayas, primarily in a belt through Kumaon, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan at elevations of , and in northern Myanmar and western and central China. It is a source of a type of intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil, spikenard. The oil has, since ancient times, been used as a perfume, as a traditional medicine, and in religious ceremonies. It is also called spikenard, nard, nardin, or muskroot. It is considered endangered due to overharvesting for folk medicine, overgrazing, loss of habitats, and forest degradation. Description The plant grows in height and has pink, bell-shaped flowers. Rhizomes (underground stems) can be crushed and distilled into an intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil, which is very thick in consistency. Nard oil is used as a perfume, an incense, a sedative, ...

Spikenard
Spikenard, also called nard, nardin, and muskroot, is a class of aromatic amber-colored essential oil derived from '' Nardostachys jatamansi'', a flowering plant in the honeysuckle family which grows in the Himalayas of Nepal, China, and India. The oil has been used over centuries as a perfume, a traditional medicine, or in religious ceremonies across a wide territory from India to Europe. Historically, the name ''nard'' has also referred to essential oils derived from other species including the closely related valerian genus, as well as Spanish lavender; these cheaper, more common plants have been used in perfume-making, and sometimes to adulterate true spikenard. Etymology The name ''nard'' is derived from Latin , from Ancient Greek (), from (''nērd''). This word may ultimately derive either from Sanskrit ( 'Indian spikenard'), or from ''Naarda'', an ancient Assyrian city (possibly the modern town of Dohuk, Iraq). The " spike" in the English name refers to the inflo ...

Valpovo
Valpovo is a town in Slavonia, Croatia. It is close to the Drava river, northwest of Osijek. As of 2021, the population of Valpovo is 7,406, with a total of 11,563 in the municipality. Name In Hungarian the town is known as ''Valpó'' and in German as ''Walpach''. In antiquity, it was called Iovalum. There are several suggested etymologies. One is that it comes from the Latin root *Iov-, meaning "divine". However, the ending can't be explained by Latin. One explanation is that it comes from the Indo-European words *yow and *h2elut, so that it means "magical beer." The other, more likely, is that it comes from the Indo-European roots *yow and *h2elom, so that it means "magical herb", whatever plant that signified. Perhaps the simplest explanation is that it comes from the Indo-European word *wel, meaning "valley", whatever "Io-" meant. Climate Since records began in 1964, the highest temperature recorded at the local weather station was , on 20 July 2007. The coldest temperatu ...
