Schools whose names are italicized are not currently in Division I. The tournament field has included 64 teams since 2001. Previous sizes have been 48 teams (1998–2000), 32 teams (1996–97), 24 teams (1994–95), 16 teams (1993), and 12 to 14 teams (1982–92). Division III teams were eligible for participation from 1982–85, and Division II teams were eligible from 1982–87. Play-in games were held in 1997, 1999, and 2000. The Big Ten Conference (stylized B1G, formerly the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference) is the oldest Division I collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference in the United States. The Penn State Nittany Lions women's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team at Pennsylvania State University. The team is a member of the Big Ten Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Nittany Lions play at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pennsylvania on the campus of Pennsylvania State University. The formation of a women's soccer program at Pennsylvania State University began with the creation of ''Penn State Women's Club Soccer'' in 1977 by the ''International Soccer Club'' at Pennsylvania State University. The team's creation was a response to women being excluded from playing on intramural soccer teams at the university. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women's Soccer
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's soccer team represents the University of Notre Dame in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I women's soccer. The team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference and is currently coached by Nate Norman, following the resignation of Theresa Romagnolo. The Fighting Irish have won three of the 29 NCAA national championships. Duke Blue Devils Women's Soccer
The Duke Blue Devils women's soccer team represent Duke University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of NCAA Division I women's college soccer. The team was founded in 1988. The Blue Devils have won the ACC regular season championship three times. The team has advanced to the NCAA Women's soccer tournament 25 times, including 4 College Cup appearances. History 1980s Duke Women's Soccer was established in 1988 under head coach Bill Hempen, who was a Duke Men's soccer coach prior to this position. Hempen was assisted by Carla Overbeck, a previous player at UNC Chapel Hill. While at UNC, Overbeck remained unbeaten for four seasons, and won four national championships.
