Montgomeryshire
Montgomeryshire, also known as ''Maldwyn'' ( cy, Sir Drefaldwyn meaning "the Shire of Baldwin's town"), is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales, historic counties and a former administrative county of Wales. It is named after its county town, Montgomery, Powys, Montgomery, which in turn is named after one of William the Conqueror's main counsellors, Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomerie, who was the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. The ''Cambrian News'' is a weekly newspaper distributed in Wales. It was founded in 1860 and is based in Cefn Llan Science Park, Aberystwyth. Cambrian News Ltd was bought by media entrepreneur Sir Ray Tindle in 1998. Cemmaes
Cemmaes ( cy, Cemaes) is a village in northern Powys, Wales, in Glantwymyn community. The population numbered 935 in 1841, this dropped sharply between 1881 and 1891 from 946 to 729. There was a railway station in the village on the Mawddwy Railway which connected to the main Cambrian Line at Cemmaes Road Cemmaes Road ( cy, Glantwymyn; ) is a village in Powys, Wales. Llanbrynmair
Llanbrynmair () is a village, community and electoral ward in Montgomeryshire, Powys, on the A470 road between Caersws and Machynlleth. Llanbrynmair, in area, is the second largest in Powys. In 2011, it had a population of 920. Description The community includes several hamlets: Talerddig, Dolfach, Bont-Dolgadfan, Pandy, Cringoed, Dylife and Pennant. The original centre is at Llan, on the road to Llanidloes, where the local parish church of St Mary is located. The current centre (formerly called "Wynnstay") at the junction of the A470 and B4518 rose to local prominence with the building of the new turnpike road in 1821 and the arrival of the railway line between Newtown and Machynlleth in 1861. Geographically, the community includes the valleys of three rivers – Afon Twymyn, Afon Iaen and Afon Rhiw Saeson – and the surrounding uplands. Llanidloes
Llanidloes () is a town and community on the A470 and B4518 roads in Powys, within the historic county boundaries of Montgomeryshire ( cy, Sir Drefaldwyn), Wales. The population in 2011 was 2,929, of whom 15% could speak Welsh. It is the third largest settlement in Montgomeryshire, after Newtown and Welshpool. It is the first town on the River Severn ( cy, Afon Hafren), counting from the source. The town's Member of Parliament is the Conservative Craig Williams (MP since 2019) and its Member of the Senedd is Conservative Russell George (MS since 2011). Surroundings The town is close to the large dam and reservoir Llyn Clywedog. There is a scenic mountain road connecting Machynlleth and Llanidloes. Machynlleth
Machynlleth () is a market town, community and electoral ward in Powys, Wales and within the historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire. It is in the Dyfi Valley at the intersection of the A487 and the A489 roads. At the 2001 Census it had a population of 2,147, rising to 2,235 in 2011. It is sometimes referred to colloquially as ''Mach''. Machynlleth was the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404,''The Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales''. John Davies, Nigel Jenkins, Menna Baines and Peredur Lynch (2008) pg527 and as such claims to be the "ancient capital of Wales". However, it has never held any official recognition as a capital. Henry Vane-Tempest
Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet (25 January 1771 – 1 August 1813) was a British politician. In early life his name was Henry Vane. He changed his name to Vane-Tempest when he inherited from his uncle John Tempest, Jr. in 1793. Life He was the son and heir of Reverend Sir Henry Vane, 1st Baronet and his wife, Frances, daughter of John Tempest, Sr. Vane was Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for the City of Durham (UK Parliament constituency), City of Durham from 1794 to 1800, replacing his uncle John Tempest, Jr., who died in a riding accident in 1793. Newtown ( cy, Y Drenewydd) is a town in Powys, Wales. It lies on the River Severn in the community of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, within the historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire. Pryce Pryce-Jones
Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones (16 October 1834 – 11 January 1920) was a Welsh entrepreneur who formed the first mail order business, revolutionising how products were sold. Creating the first mail order catalogues in 1861 – which consisted of woollen goods – for the first time customers could order by post, and the goods were delivered by railway. The BBC summed up his legacy as "The mail order pioneer who started a billion-pound industry". Pryce-Jones became hugely successful in the United Kingdom where he had over 100,000 customers, which included Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria. In England he was able to promise next-day delivery. His business also took off overseas, selling Welsh flannel to the rest of Europe, the United States followed by Australia. During the 1870s he took part in exhibitions all over the world, winning several awards, and he became world famous. The Queen knighted him in 1887. Sir Pryce Edward Pryce-Jones, 1st Baronet TD (6 February 1861–22 May 1926) was Conservative MP for Montgomery Boroughs. Early life Pryce Edward Pryce-Jones was born on 6 February 1861, the eldest son of Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones (1834–1920) of Dolerw, Newtown, Montgomeryshire, who established the mail-order clothing firm of Pryce-Jones Ltd and served as MP for Montgomery Boroughs in 1884–5 and 1892–5.''Burke's'': Pryce-Jones. He qualified as a Barrister-at-Law at the Inner Temple in 1892 and received his MA from Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1893. He later served as chairman of Pryce-Jones Ltd.
