The Ministry of Education and Culture ( fi, opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriö, sv, undervisnings- och kulturministeriet) is one of the twelve ministries in Finland. It prepares laws and oversees the administration of matters relating to education (such as daycare, schools and universities), and culture (such as museums, libraries and arts), as well as sports and science. The Ministry of Education and Culture is one of the oldest ministries in Finland. It was started as the Ecclesiastical Department in 1809, when the Grand Duchy of Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Li Andersson
Li Sigrid Andersson (born 13 May 1987) is a Finnish politician who has been serving as Minister of Education since 2019. The leader of the Left Alliance, she has been a Member of Parliament since 2015. She is also the city councilor of Turku and was the chair of the party's youth wing, Left Youth. Education Andersson graduated from Åbo Akademi University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in international law, specializing in international human rights law and refugee law, with a minor in Russian language and culture. Political career In the parliamentary elections of 2015 Andersson was elected with the highest number of personal votes in Varsinais-Suomi (with 17 seats). Candidates in the district included the chairmen of the National Coalition Party and the Green League. Left Alliance (Finland)
The Left Alliance ( fi, Vasemmistoliitto , sv, Vänsterförbundet, vas.) is a left-wing political party in Finland. The Left Alliance was founded in 1990 as the chief successor of the left-wing Finnish People's Democratic League (SKDL). Although not as electorally successful as the SKDL, it has achieved some success, typically receiving around eight to ten percent of the vote in parliamentary elections. It has participated in five cabinets, most recently the Marin Cabinet formed in 2019. It is socialist, and democratic-socialist, and it supports the principles of eco-socialism. A member of the Party of the European Left and Nordic Green Left Alliance, the party organ is the weekly ''Kansan Uutiset''. Education In Finland
The educational system in Finland consists of daycare programmes (for babies and toddlers), a one-year "pre-school" (age six), and an 11-year compulsory basic comprehensive school (age seven to age eighteen). Nowadays secondary general academic and vocational education, higher education and adult education are compulsory. During their nine years of common basic education, students are not selected, tracked, or streamed. There is also inclusive special education within the classroom and instructional efforts to minimize low achievement. After basic education, students must choose to continue with secondary education in either an academic track (''lukio'') or a vocational track (''ammattioppilaitos''), both of which usually take three years and give a qualification to continue to tertiary education.
