Men Of The North
''Men of the North'' is a 1930 American Western film directed by Hal Roach and written by Richard Schayer from a story by Willard Mack. The film stars Gilbert Roland, Barbara Leonard, Arnold Korff, Robert Elliott and George Davis. The film was released on September 27, 1930, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is notable as the only film Roach made as a director-for-hire, as he normally functioned as a producer. Plot Louis (Roland), a charming French-Canadian, is accused of stealing gold from a mine by Mountie Sergeant Mooney (Elliot) after getting a tip from Louis' girl friend, Woolie-Woolie (Quartero), who correctly suspects he has fallen in love with Nedra (Leonard), the mine owner's daughter. Louis has to work hard to prove his innocence, even to the point of saving other characters' lives in a series of incidents. Charlie Hall (actor)
Charlie Hall (also credited Charley Hall; 19 August 1899 – 7 December 1959) was an English film actor. He is best known as the "Little Nemesis" of Laurel and Hardy. He performed in nearly 50 films with them, making Hall the most frequent supporting actor in the comedy duo's productions. Life and career Hall was born in Ward End, Birmingham, Warwickshire, and learned carpentry as a trade; however, as a teenager, he became a member of the Fred Karno troupe of stage comedians. In his late teens, he visited his sister in New York City and stayed there, finding employment as a stagehand. While working behind the scenes, he met the comic actor Bobby Dunn and they became friends; Dunn convinced Hall to take a stab again at acting, which he did. Nina Quartero (born Gladys Quartararo; March 17, 1908 – November 23, 1985) was an American actress whose career spanned from 1929 to 1943. Career Born in 1908 in Mount Vernon, New York, as Gladys Quartararo, she came from a close family and was the youngest of seven children. She often played supporting roles and sometimes a love interest for the lead male actor. In ''One Stolen Night'' (1928) Quartero was cast with Betty Bronson and William Collier. The story concerns a British World War I soldier who comes to the assistance of an enslaved dancer. Richard Schayer (December 13, 1880 – March 13, 1956) was an American screenwriter. He wrote for more than 100 films between 1916 and 1956. He was born in Washington, D.C., son of Col. George Frederick Schayer and writer Julia Schayer, and died in Hollywood, California.
