This is a list of members of the 21st Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1918 to 1920, as elected at the 1918 state election held on 16 March 1918. During the term, several National Party members switched allegiance to the new Country Party. Notes : On 14 October 1919, the Premier of Queensland and Labor member for Barcoo, T. J. Ryan, resigned to run for West Sydney at the 1919 federal election. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Assembly first sat in May 1860 and produced Australia's first Hansard in April 1864. Electoral District Of Lockyer
Lockyer is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district consists primarily of Gatton and Laidley Shires and northern parts of Beaudesert Shire. It includes the major town of Gatton and a number of smaller centres including Laidley, Helidon and Withcott. The eastern parts of the district are part of the outer southern suburbs of Ipswich and Brisbane in the area of Greenmount. The district is bounded on the west by Toowoomba North, and Toowoomba South. On the southwest and south by Condamine, Southern Downs and Beaudesert. To the north and northwest by Nanango. To the northeast, where it passes south of Ipswich and Brisbane, it is bounded by Ipswich West, Ipswich, Moggill. To the east it shares a boundary with the seat of Logan. Cuthbert Butler (politician)
Robert John Cuthbert Butler (born Robert Thomas Poxon; 20 April 1889 – 8 November 1950) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Lockyer in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1918 to 1920. Early life Butler was born on 20 April 1889 in Pembury, Kent, England. He was the third of seven children born to of Emma (née Batchelor) and John Albert Poxon. His father was a tenant farmer who grew hops, but moved the family to Canterbury after being bankrupted in 1896 and worked as a baker. Butler is recorded on the 1911 UK census as a tailor living with his parents. However, by the end of the year he had moved to London, where he changed his surname from "Poxon" and reinvented himself as a 28-year-old journalist rather than a 22-year-old apprentice tailor. Butler left England in December 1911 and worked his way to Australia on a steamer. Electoral District Of Barcoo
Barcoo was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1885 to 1972. It was created in 1885, by dividing the district of Mitchell, with Barcoo taking up its western area. It was named after the Barcoo River, and covered remote rural areas in Southwest Queensland. Barcoo was mostly a safe seat for the Labor Party The death of Frank Murphy created a by-election on 5 March 1892. A shearer, Tommy Ryan (not to be confused with Premier T. J. Ryan), became the first endorsed Labor candidate in Queensland, and won the seat against opponent William Henry Campbell, the editor and proprietor of the local newspaper, The Western Champion. The seat was later held by the Premier, T. J. Ryan. Remarkably, his win in 1909 was the last time a member was elected for the seat at a general election. Frank Bulcock
Frank William Bulcock (6 June 1892 – 19 January 1973) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Bulcock was born at Mount Arapiles, near Horsham, Victoria in 1892 to Thomas Bulcock and his wife Eliza Mackay (née Grove). After completing his schooling at local schools he studied veterinary science at Sydney Technical College and won a Department of Agriculture bursary to Wagga Wagga Experiment Farm. Electoral District Of Toowoomba
Toowoomba was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The seat was in Toowoomba. History The seat had two incarnations. The first was from 1873 to 1878 and the second from 1912 to 1960. In 1873, it was created by renaming the electoral district of Drayton & Toowoomba. In 1878, its name was changed back to Drayton & Toowoomba (but as a 2-member constituency). Its second incarnation began in 1912 when Drayton & Toowoomba split into Toowoomba, East Toowoomba and Drayton. The sitting member for Drayton & Toowoomba, James Tolmie, successfully stood for election in Toowoomba in 1912 after the split. Toowoomba was abolished in the 1960 redistribution. The sitting member, Mervyn Anderson, successfully stood for election in the new seat of Toowoomba East in the 1960 election. Frank Tenison Brennan (6 December 1884 – 6 August 1949) was a Labor Party politician, lawyer and Supreme Court judge. He was a Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Queensland MLA from 1918 to 1925. Maree was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Maree was created by the 1910 Electoral Districts Act, taking effect at the 1912 elections. It was based on Kangaroo Point, Queensland and consisted of the slightly altered Electoral district of Woolloongabba, which was abolished in 1912. Most of the area of Maree and was incorporated into the Electoral district of Norman in 1950. Electoral District Of Fassifern
Fassifern was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1992. It was based on the area south of Ipswich and stretched toward the New South Wales border, although in subsequent redistributions was reduced in size away from the growing Brisbane area. It was named after the Fassifern Valley. Fassifern was a safe Country/National district for most of its existence. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, and was largely replaced by the new district of Beaudesert. Ernest Bell
Ernest Thomas Bell (31 March 1880 – 2 May 1930) was a pastoralist and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Bell was born in Camboon, Queensland, to parents John Thomas Marsh Bell and his wife Gertrude Augusta (née Norton) and attended Toowoomba Grammar School and Ipswich Grammar School. When he left school he was the manager of Combargno Station, Roma. He was involved in many agricultural associations over the years including president of the Fassifern Agricultural and Pastoral Association and chairman of the Australian Meat Council.
