Massachusetts General Election, 1990
A Massachusetts general election was held on November 6, 1990 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The election included: * statewide elections for United States Senator, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Treasurer, and Auditor; * district elections for U.S. Representatives, State Representatives, State Senators, and Governor's Councillors; and * ballot questions at the state and local levels. Democratic and Republican candidates were selected in party primaries held September 19, 1990. Governor & Lieutenant Governor Republicans William Weld and Paul Cellucci were elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively, over Democratic candidates John Silber and Marjorie Clapprood. 1990 United States Elections
The 1990 United States elections were held on November 6 and elected the members of the 102nd United States Congress. The elections occurred in the middle of Republican President George H. W. Bush's term and during the Gulf War. The Democratic Party easily retained control of Congress The Democratic Party built on its majorities in both chambers of Congress. They picked up a net of one seat in the Senate. Democrats won the nationwide popular vote for the House of Representatives by a margin of 7.8 point percentage points, picking up a net of seven seats. In the gubernatorial elections, both parties lost a net of one seat to third parties. The Democratic performance was underwhelming, but a wave wasn't needed due to the party already having solid control of Congress. Paul Cellucci
Argeo Paul Cellucci (; April 24, 1948 – June 8, 2013) was an American politician and diplomat from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A Republican, he served as the 69th governor of Massachusetts from 1999 to 2001, and as the United States Ambassador to Canada from 2001 to 2005. He also served as the Commonwealth's 68th lieutenant governor from 1991 to 1999, as well as in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate from 1977 to 1991. When Bill Weld resigned in 1997 after being nominated for United States Ambassador to Mexico, Cellucci became acting governor. Joseph Daniel Malone (born November 18, 1954) is an American businessman, former Treasurer and Receiver-General of Massachusetts, and a former member of the Republican Party. In 2010, Malone ran for the Republican nomination for Congress in Massachusetts's 10th congressional district. In 2013, he announced he was leaving the Republican party to become an Independent. David William Cowens ( ; born October 25, 1948) is an American former professional basketball player and NBA head coach. At , he played the center position and occasionally played power forward. Cowens spent most of his playing career with the Boston Celtics. He was the 1971 NBA Rookie of the Year and the 1973 NBA Most Valuable Player. Lowell () is a city in Massachusetts, in the United States. Alongside Cambridge, It is one of two traditional seats of Middlesex County. James Michael Shannon (born April 4, 1952), is an American Democratic politician from Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 1985, and later as the Massachusetts Attorney General. Biography Shannon was born in Methuen, Massachusetts on April 4, 1952 and grew up in Lawrence. He graduated from Phillips Academy in 1969 and received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1973. He earned a J.D. degree at The George Washington University Law School in 1975 and practiced law in Lawrence. In 1970 and 1971 Shannon was an intern in the office of Congressman F. Bradford Morse.
