Manifiesto (Víctor Jara Album)
''Manifiesto'' is the ninth solo studio album from Chilean songwriter Víctor Jara.The record was released posthumously after his brutal torture and murder in 1973. It used a base the songs written for the album '' Tiempos que cambian (Times that change)'', that was left unfinished. In the album, the Chilean group Inti-Illimani and the Chilean musician Patricio Castillo participate. Patricio Castillo belonged, until 1971, to Quilapayún, another famous Chilean band, which he re-entered definitively several years later. Most of the songs were composed by Víctor Jara, with the exception of ''«Aquí me quedo»'' (Here I stay), composed with Patricio Castillo. Patricio Castillo (folk Musician)
Patricio Castillo (born 1946, Cautín, Chile) is a Chilean musician and former member of the Chilean folk music group Quilapayún. He is well known for his collaborations with the Chilean singer-songwriter, Víctor Jara. Biography Castillo was born into a musical family; both of his parents were classical musicians and pedagogues, his father a violinist and his mother a pianist. Early in his life Castillo defined his aspirations to pursue a career in music as his parents had done. He was a childhood friend of Horacio Salinas who also originated from his hometown; who would also go on to join the neo-folkloric ''New Chilean Song'' movement that aimed to renovate Chilean folklore. Castillo was educated in Santiago and in 1963 he began to study classical guitar at the National Conservatorium of Music which would later become part of the University of Chile. Sergio Ortega (composer)
Sergio Ortega Alvarado (February 2, 1938 – September 15, 2003) was a Chilean composer and pianist. Biography Ortega was born in Antofagasta, Chile. He studied composition with Roberto Falabella and with Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt in the National Conservatory at the University of Chile. After graduating, he worked in the Institute of Musical Extension and was a sound engineer for six years in the university's experimental theater, Teatro Antonio Varas. Ortega was a force for the leftist movement in Chile. Not only did he compose President Salvador Allende's electoral theme song, " Venceremos" (We shall triumph), he was also the author of the worldwide anthem of popular resistance, " ¡El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido!" Pablo Neruda
Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto (12 July 1904 – 23 September 1973), better known by his pen name and, later, legal name Pablo Neruda (; ), was a Chilean poet-diplomat and politician who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. Quilapayún
Quilapayún () are a folk music group from Chile and among the longest lasting and most influential ambassadors of the ''Nueva Canción Chilena'' movement and genre. Formed during the mid-1960s, the group became inseparable with the revolution that occurred in the popular music of the country under the Popular Unity Government of Salvador Allende. Since its formation and during its forty-year history both in Chile and during its lengthy period of exile in France the group has seen modifications to its personnel lineup and the subject and content of its work. Inti-Illimani
Inti-Illimani (; from Quechuan ''Inti'' and Aymara '' Illimani)'' are an instrumental and vocal Latin American folk music ensemble from Chile. The band was formed in 1967 by a group of university students and it acquired widespread popularity in Chile for their song '' Venceremos'' (We shall win!), which became the anthem of the Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende. At the moment of the 11 September, 1973 Chilean coup they were on tour in Europe and were unable to return to their country where their music was proscribed by the ruling military junta of Augusto Pinochet. In Europe their music took on a multifarious character, incorporating elements of European baroque and other traditional music forms to their rich and colourful Latin American rhythms, so creating a distinctive fusion of modern world music. Víctor Jara
Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (; 28 September 1932 – 16 September 1973) was a Chilean teacher, theater director, poet, singer-songwriter and Communist political activist. He developed Chilean theater by directing a broad array of works, ranging from locally produced plays to world classics, as well as the experimental work of playwrights such as Ann Jellicoe. He also played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric musicians who established the ''Nueva canción chilena'' (New Chilean Song) movement. This led to an uprising of new sounds in popular music during the administration of President Salvador Allende. Jara was arrested by the Chilean military shortly after the 11 September 1973 coup led by Augusto Pinochet, which overthrew Allende.
