The Museum of Ixelles (; ), also called the (Municipal) Museum of Fine Arts of Ixelles (; ), is a List of municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, municipal art museum in Brussels, Belgium, focusing on Belgian art from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is located at 71, / in Ixelles. It is served by the Brussels buses, bus stops / (on line 71) and Malibran (on lines 38 and 60). History The Museum of Fine Arts of Ixelles was founded in 1892 to house a collection of works donated by the painter and collector Edmond De Pratere and grew rapidly with donations from generous patrons such as Léon Gauchez (1825–1907), Fritz Toussaint (1846–1920) and Max Janlet (1903–1976). The art patron Octave Maus (1856–1919) donated more than 200 impressionism, impressionist, Neo-impressionism, neo-impressionist and Symbolism (arts), symbolist works. Eugène Smits
Eugène Smits (22 May 1826, Antwerp - 4 December 1912, Brussels) was a Belgian portrait painter. Life and work He studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with François-Joseph Navez. From 1851 to 1852, he lived in Paris, where he made the professional acquaintance of Jean-François Millet, Eugène Isabey, and the brothers Joseph and Alfred Stevens. He returned to Paris in 1855, to take part in the Exposition Universelle. From 1861 to 1864, he lived in Italy, where he created his largest canvas: "Ein Sonntagsnachmittag in Pincio" (A Sunday Afternoon in Pincio, 1862). In 1868, he was one of the co-founders of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts. In 1902, he was elected a member of his alma mater, the Académie royale. He also wrote a collection of memories and reflections, ''Les pensées d’Eugène Smits'', which was published posthumously in 1913, with illustrations by Fernand Khnopff. Emile Claus (27 September 1849 – 14 June 1924) was a Belgian painter. Life Emile Claus was born on 27 September 1849, in Sint-Eloois-Vijve, a village in West Flanders (Belgium), at the banks of the river Lys (river), Lys. Emile was the twelfth child in a family of thirteen. Father Alexander was a grocer-publican and for some time town councillor. Mother Celestine Verbauwhede came from a Brabant skipper's family and had her hands full with her offspring. As a child, Emile already loved drawing and on Sunday went three kilometres on foot to the Academy of Waregem (the neighbouring town) to learn how to draw. He graduated from the Academy with a gold medal. Although father Claus allowed him to take drawing classes, he did not fancy an artist's career for his son. Henri-Edmond Cross (; 20 May 1856 – 16 May 1910), born Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix (), was a French painter and printmaker. Starting as a wood-engraver, he subsequently concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist and finally returning to Impressionism. Guillaume Vogels
Guillaume Vogels (9 June 1836, in Brussels – 9 January 1896, in Ixelles) was a Belgian Impressionist painter. Life He was the son of a laborer. After his primary education, he was apprenticed to the Bellis Brothers, a house painting and decoration firm, and received a master certificate in 1855. He later owned his own decorating company in Brussels. One of his employees there was the Greek painter Périclès Pantazis, who became his lifelong friend, introducing him to the works of Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet and showing him the techniques of painting with the palette knife. In 1870, he went to Paris, where he came under the influence of the Barbizon school. His first exhibition was at Ghent in 1874, but his work was not well received by the critics.
