The Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw Tribal Council, formerly Musgamagw Tsawataineuk, is a First Nations tribal council based in the Queen Charlotte Strait region around northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The headquarters of the Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw Tribal Council is in the community of Quinsam, British Columbia in Campbell River, but territories of the three member nations span the Mainland Inlets of the Broughton Archipelago just to the north of the mouth of Knight Inlet. ''First Nations'' () is a term used to identify Indigenous peoples in Canada who are neither Inuit nor Métis. Knight Inlet
Knight Inlet ( Kwakʼwala: ''Tsawatti'') is one of the principal inlets of the British Columbia Coast, and the largest of the major inlets in the southern part of the Coast. It is fifth in sequence of the great saltwater inlets north from the 49th parallel near Vancouver, but it is the first whose outflow points away from the Strait of Georgia, opening into Queen Charlotte Strait at the Kwakwakaʼwakw community of Memkumlis (often known by the name of the group who were based there, the Mamalilikala) on Village Island. Gwawaenuk Tribe
The Gwawaenuk Tribe, or Gwawaʼenux̱w is a First Nations band government of the Kwakwaka'wakw people located in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. The Gwawaenuk Tribe has no year-round road access to a service centre and being about 160 km to 240 km from the nearest service centre. Language As of 2012, about half the tribe speaks the Kwak'wala language. The tribe's dialect is called "Gwawaenuk." Demographics First nation number 627 with 39 members. Dzawada̱'enux̱w First Nation
The Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w First Nation, formerly Tsawataineuk, is a First Nations band government in the Queen Charlotte Strait region north of northern Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is a member of the Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw Tribal Council, along with the Gwawaenuk Tribe and the Ḵwiḵwa̱sut'inux̱w Ha̱xwa'mis First Nation. The territory of the Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w First Nation spans the whole of Broughton Archipelago on the northern side of Queen Charlotte Strait and adjoining areas of the BC mainland. The main village of the Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w people is Gwa'Yi, at the mouth of the Kingcome River. As of November 2007, there were 59 people living in the community. Ḵwiḵwa̱sut'inux̱w Ha̱xwa'mis, formerly the Kwicksutaineuk-ah-kwa-mish First Nation is a First Nations in Canada, First Nations band government based on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, in the Queen Charlotte Strait region. It is a member of the Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw Tribal Council, along with the Gwawaenuk Tribe and the Dzawada̱'enux̱w First Nation. The Kwikwasut'inuxw and Haxwa'mis are two of the many subgroups of the peoples known as Kwakwaka'wakw, which has two meanings: "smoke of the world" or "beach at the north side of the river." Broughton Archipelago is a group of islands located at the eastern end of Queen Charlotte Strait in Mount Waddington Regional District, British Columbia. The archipelago is the traditional territory of the Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, Namgis, Ma'amtagila and Tlowitsis nations of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples. A tribal council is an association of First Nations bands in Canada, generally along regional, ethnic or linguistic lines. An Indian band, usually consisting of one main community, is the fundamental unit of government for First Nations in Canada. Bands may unite to form a tribal council, but they need not do so. Bands that do not belong to a tribal council are said to be ''independent''. Bands may and do withdraw from tribal councils. Furthermore, the authority that bands delegate to their tribal council varies, with some tribal councils serving as a strong, central organization while others are granted limited power by their members.
