There have been several Murray Baronetcies, all created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. Four of these baronetcy, baronetcies are extant. Baronetage Of Nova Scotia
Baronets are hereditary titles awarded by the Crown. The current baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier, existing baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Great Britain. To be recognised as a baronet, it is necessary to prove a claim of succession. When this has been done, the name is entered on the Official Roll of the Baronetage. Persons who have not proven their claims may not be officially styled as baronets. This was ordained by Royal warrant (document), Royal Warrant in February 1910. A baronetcy is considered vacant if the previous holder has died within the previous five years and if no one has proven their succession, and is considered dormant if no one has proven their succession in more than five years after the death of the previous incumbent. Sir Alexander Murray, 3rd Baronet
Sir Alexander Murray, 3rd Baronet (after 1684 – 18 May 1743) was a Scottish baronet and politician. He was a son of Sir David Murray (1659–1729) and his first wife, Anne Bruce. Alexander Murray was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Peeblesshire from 1710 to 1713. On 16 August 1710 he married Grizel Baillie (1692–1759), the elder daughter of Lady Grisell Baillie of Jerviswood and George Baillie. Although this was a love match, it was a disaster. After the couple had lived a few miserable months under her father's roof, Murray made himself a ‘voluntary outcast’. There was a brief reconciliation in 1711–12, when he was accepted back into the Baillie household, but his behaviour led to a process for separation being instituted against him, and its completion in 1714 seems to have unbalanced him still further. Baronetcies In The Baronetage Of Nova Scotia
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century; however, in its current usage it was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Baronets rank below barons, but seemingly above all knights grand cross, knights commander and knights bachelor of the British chivalric orders, that are in turn below in chivalric precedence than the most senior British chivalric orders of the Garter and the Thistle. Debrett's () is a British professional coaching company and publisher and authority on etiquette and behaviour, founded in 1769 with the publication of the first edition of ''The New Peerage''. The company takes its name from its founder, John Debrett. John Debrett John Debrett (8 January 1753 – 15 November 1822) was the London-born son of Jean Louys de Bret, a French cook of Huguenot extraction and his wife Rachel Panchaud. As a boy of thirteen, John Debrett was apprenticed to a Piccadilly bookseller and publisher, Robert Davis. He remained there until 1780, when he moved across Piccadilly to work for John Almon, bookseller and stationer. Sir Joseph Murray, 3rd Baronet
Sir Joseph Murray, 3rd Baronet and 1st Count Murray (6 August 1718 – 5 June 1802) was a soldier of Scottish descent. He was born at Tournai, the son of Robert Murray, a general in the Dutch States Army. He served as colonel of the Los Rios Regiment in the Austrian service, and as an Imperial chamberlain. For his courage at the Battle of Breslau in 1757 and the Battle of Hochkirch in 1758 he was made a Knight of the Order of Maria Theresa on 23 January 1760. On 16 September 1760 he was created a Baron of the Netherlands (''Baron aux Pays Bas'') and on 25 November 1761 the Emperor Francis I created him a Count of the Holy Roman Empire as ''Graf von Murray'', with remainder to the heirs male of his body. Lt Colonel William Keith-Murray 7th Baronet of Ochtertyre FRSE FRSSA (19 July 1801 – 16 October 1861) was a Scottish peer, landowner and soldier. Life He was born William Murray at Ochtertyre on 19 July 1801 the son of Patrick Murray of Ochtertyre and Lady Mary Anne Hope, daughter of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun by his third wife. In 1834 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposer was James Skene. He resigned from the Society in 1839. In 1843 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of the Arts. In 1837 on the death of his father he succeeded to the baronetcy. He died on 16 October 1861. Family In 1833 at St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh he married Helen Margaret Oliphant Keith daughter of Sir Alexander Keith of Dunnottar. Following marriage he adopted the name Keith-Murray. Sir Patrick Murray of Ochtertyre, 6th Baronet FRSE (3 February 1771 – 1 June 1837) was a Scottish advocate, landowner and politician, serving as MP for Edinburgh from 1806 to 1812 and Baron of the Exchequer in 1820. He is sometimes referred to as Sir Peter Murray. Life He was born at Ochtertyre House on 3 February 1771 the eldest son of Lady Augusta Mackenzie, daughter of George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie, and her husband William Murray of Ochtertyre. Sir David Murray, 4th Baronet
Sir David Murray, 4th Baronet (died 1769) was a Scottish Jacobite soldier. Biography Murray was the son of David Murray, a merchant, and Frances Macclesfield. He was the nephew of Sir Alexander Murray, 3rd Baronet, and succeeded to his uncle's baronetcy on 18 May 1743. He was the captain of a regiment of hussars and was active in the Jacobite rising of 1745 in the army of Charles Edward Stuart. He was taken prisoner, attainted of his lands and title and sentenced to death at York in 1746, but was pardoned on the condition that he left Scotland for life. Murray left the British Isles to live in exile with Charles Edward Stuart in France, where he was granted a pension of 1,000 livres by Louis XV. He was in Paris with the Prince in 1749.
