During the Mughal Empire, ''Munshi'' () came to be used as a respected title for persons who achieved mastery over language and politics in the Indian subcontinent. Use in Bengal The surname "Munshi" ( Bengali: মুন্সি) is used by both Bengali Hindu and Bengali Muslim families in West Bengal, India and in Bangladesh. The surname is commonly associated with former Zamindari families in Bengal from the time of the Nawabs of Bengal in the early 18th-century. Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi
Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (; 30 December 1887 – 8 February 1971), popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer from Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to author and politician. He is a well-known name in Gujarati literature. He founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an educational trust, in 1938. Munshi wrote his works in three languages namely Gujarati, English and Hindi. Before independence of India, Munshi was part of Indian National Congress and after independence, he joined Swatantra Party. Munshi held several important posts like member of Constituent Assembly of India, minister of agriculture and food of India, and governor of Uttar Pradesh. Munshi Ram (19 December 1906 – 29 June 1998), Indian spiritual guru and follower of Faqir Chand. Early life He was born in Meghwal family at village Sundernagar at Sialkot, Punjab (now in Pakistan) in the year 1906. Spiritual Teachings He was assigned specific work of Guru in the year 1977 by putting a religious mark on the forehead, presenting 'turban' (Hindi:पगड़ी), Rs.5 and a coconut by Faqir Chand. Zamindar
A zamindar in the Indian subcontinent was an autonomous or semi-autonomous feudal lord of a ''zamindari'' (feudal estate). The term itself came into use during the Mughal Empire, when Persian was the official language; ''zamindar'' is the Persian for ''landowner''. During the British Raj, the British began using it as a local synonym for "estate". Zamindars as a class were equivalent to lords and barons; in some cases, they were independent sovereign princes. Similarly, their holdings were typically hereditary and came with the right to collect taxes on behalf of imperial courts or for military purposes. Harendranath Munshi
Harendranath Munshi ( Bengali: হরেন্দ্রনাথ মুন্সী, 1914- 30 January, 1938) was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter involved in the Indian independence movement during 1930s. Background Munshi was born in 1914. He was a member of the Chaugachha zamindar family of erstwhile Jessore in British India (present day Bangladesh). Revolutionary activities As a revolutionary, Munshi was active in ample revolutionary activities. In 1934, he was sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment in the inter-provincial conspiracy case and he was first transferred to Diamond Harbour and later to Dhaka Central Jail. In the Dhaka Central Jail he started fatal hunger strike since 21 January, 1938, to exhibit his protest against inhuman treatments with the political prisoners and their classification as criminals. Mohammad Ibrahim Soomro by his pen name Ibrahim Munshi ) was a Sindhi-language poet and writer. He was born on January 15, 1934, in Janhan Soomro جنھاڻ سومرو, Tando Muhammad Khan, Hyderabad District, Sindh. He wrote seven books of poetry. He died on 31 July 2003. The Kashmiri Pandits (also known as Kashmiri Brahmins) are a group of Kashmiri Hindus and a part of the larger Saraswat Brahmin community of India.
