Morozovsk () is a town and the administrative center of Morozovsky District in Rostov Oblast, Russia, located on the Bystraya River (left tributary of the Seversky Donets), northeast of Rostov-on-Don, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History The ''khutor'' of Morozov () was founded in the 1880s. In 1900, Morozovskaya railway station, named after it, was opened nearby. In 1910, the ''stanitsa'' of Taubeyevskaya () was established near the railway station. It was renamed Morozovskaya on April 24, 1917. Later, these two rural localities grew and merged, and the resulting settlement was granted town status in 1941. Morozovsk (air Base)
Morozovsk is an air base of the Russian Aerospace Forces as part of the 4th Air and Air Defence Forces Army, Southern Military District. The base is home to the which had three squadrons of Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO: Fullback) as part of the 1st Guards Composite Aviation Division . History The regiment arrived from Finsterwalde in Germany in 1993, still as the 559th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment. The 559th was forward deployed during part of 2022 to Primorsko-Akhtarsk air base as part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. On 5 April 2024 Ukraine launched 53 drones into western Russia. Ukrainian intelligence officials claimed that at least six aircraft were destroyed, eight "heavily damaged" and 20 personnel killed at the Morozovsk airbase. A stanitsa or stanitza ( ; ), also spelled stanycia ( ) or stanica ( ), was a historical administrative unit of a Cossack host, a type of Cossack polity that existed in the Russian Empire. Etymology The Russian word is the diminutive of the word (), which means "station" or "police district". It is distantly related to the Sanskrit word (), which means "station", "locality", or "district". Structure The stanitsa was a unit of economic and political organisation of the Cossack peoples who lived in the Russian Empire. Each stanitsa contained several villages and khutirs.
