Henry Morgan & Company (colloquially Morgan's) was a Canadian department store chain founded by Henry Morgan in 1845. The first store was in Montreal, and expanded to include 11 stores in Ontario and Quebec before being bought by Hudson's Bay Company in 1960. Most Ontario stores were converted to The Bay in 1968 and the Morgan's locations in Quebec were renamed La Baie in 1972. The flagship store was in the Henry Morgan Building in Downtown Montreal, and remains a flagship property of the Hudson's Bay Company. Henry Morgan (November 14, 1819 – December 12, 1893) was a Scots-Quebecer department store pioneer in Canada who founded Henry Morgan & Company. Early life Henry Morgan was born into a family of humble circumstances in Saline, which was an isolated village six miles (10 km) northwest of the royal burgh of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. He received the basic education that was available before he took a job with a wholesale dry goods firm in the city of Glasgow. Career In 1844, after he had gained sound knowledge of the textile business, saved a small amount of money from ten years of hard work, and obtained a loan from his brother-in-law John Davie, the ambitious Henry Morgan decided to emigrate. Encouraged by David Smith, a fellow Scot in Montreal, Quebec, Morgan believed that a better life existed in Canada than in Scotland, which was faced with Lowland Clearances, "the Clearances", and he planned to put his training to good use and open a business there. Eglinton Square Shopping Centre is an enclosed shopping mall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located at Eglinton Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue in Scarborough's Golden Mile neighbourhood. Hudson's Bay, also known as The Bay, was a Canadian department store chain. It served as the flagship brand of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the oldest and longest-surviving company in North America as well as one of the oldest and largest continuously operating companies in the world. Founded on 2 May 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company opened its first department store in 1881 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The chain operated under the company name until 1965, when the stores were rebranded as The Bay. The Bay Building (originally the Henry Morgan Building; ) is a department store on Saint Catherine Street West in downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was designed by John Pierce Hill for Henry Morgan, and opened in 1891. It was the flagship store of the Morgan's department store chain, was acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1960, and was converted to a regional The Bay flagship store in 1960. The store was rebranded to Hudson's Bay in 2013, and slated to include a Saks Fifth Avenue store by 2018, however, these plans were indefinitely postponed.
