Monument To Felix Dzerzhinsky, Ufa
The Monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky () is a sculpture of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the first chairman of the Cheka, in Dzerzhinsky Park (Ufa), Dzerzhinsky Park in the city of Ufa in Bashkortostan, Russia. History The statue was erected in Ufa in 1987 near the building of the Bashkir KGB (now - the building of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bashkortostan) in the park behind the Rodina Cinema, Ufa, "Rodina" cinema. The sculptor of the monument was the Leningrad artist Albert Seraphimovich Charkin. The sculpture was cast at the Leningrad plant "Monumentskulptura". Simultaneously with the installation of the monument, a row of Populus, poplars were planted behind it. The popular name of the monument is "With his back to the Motherland" because the monument is behind the "Rodina" ("Motherland") cinema and is turned away from it. Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky (; ; – 20 July 1926), nicknamed Iron Felix (), was a Soviet revolutionary and politician of Polish origin. From 1917 until his death in 1926, he led the first two Soviet secret police organizations, the Cheka and the OGPU, establishing state security organs for the Bolshevik government. He was a key architect of the Red Terror * * and de-Cossackization. Born to a Polish family of noble descent in their Ozhyemblovo Estate (in 1881 named Dzerzhinovo), in Russian Poland, Dzerzhinsky embraced revolutionary politics from a young age, and was active in the Social Democracy of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania party. The Rodina Cinema () is an historic cinema building in Lenina Street, the main street of Ufa, Bashkortostan, Russia. The building was completed and opened in 1953, and was still being used as a cinema. History Concept and construction In March 1938, the City of Ufa accepted an initial general development plan stipulating that a two-hall cinema for 600 persons be constructed in the historical center of the city, at the intersection of Lenina and Chernyshevsky Streets. The following year, the Council of People's Commissars of the Bashkir ASSR approved the construction of the cinema, and engineering and geological surveys of the site were carried out. Soon afterwards, however, the government of the Republic issued a decree to construct a new cinema in the northern industrial district of Ufa, and then, following the intervention of World War II, the revised cinema construction plans were cancelled.
