Montezooma's Revenge
MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress, previously known as Montezooma’s Revenge, is a shuttle roller coaster located at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, United States. Designed by Werner Stengel and built by Schwarzkopf Industries GmbH, the ride opened to the public on May 21, 1978. It is one of eight flywheel-launched units around the world and the oldest looping shuttle coaster still operating in its original location. MonteZOOMa was closed in early 2022 for a major refurbishment and is scheduled to reopen in 2025. History Montezooma's Revenge was named after the bluegrass group, Montezuma's Revenge, a musical act that performed regularly in the wagon camp at Knott's Berry Farm. Based on the launch mechanism for aircraft carriers, the flywheel-launched shuttle loop is a successor of the drop-tower launch shuttle, and predates modern Linear Induction Motor, LIM and hydraulic launch systems by over 15 years. Werner Stengel
Werner Stengel (born 22 August 1936, in Bochum) is a German roller coaster designer and engineer. Stengel is the founder of Stengel Engineering, also known as Ingenieurbüro Stengel GmbH (or Ingenieurbuero Stengel GmbH). Stengel first worked on amusement park rides in collaboration with Anton Schwarzkopf in 1963. He established his own company, Stengel Engineering, in 1965. His collaboration with Schwarzkopf was responsible for many innovations in roller coaster design, including in 1976 the first modern "vertical" looping coaster, ''Revolution'', at Six Flags Magic Mountain. (Arrow Dynamics had debuted the first modern inversion, the corkscrew, a year earlier at Knott's Berry Farm). His Track transition curve, clothoid loop is now standard on many roller coasters, as it produces less intense forces on the human body than a circular vertical loop. Moonsault Scramble (ムーンサルト・スクランブル) was a shuttle roller coaster located at Fuji-Q Highland in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. Manufactured by Sanoyas Hishino Meisho, the ride opened to the public on 24 June 1983. According to the ''Guinness Book of Records'', Moonsault Scramble was the tallest roller coaster in the world at when it opened. It held the record until the opening of Fujiyama, a coaster that opened at the same park in 1996, which reached in height. The coaster was removed from the park in 2000 to make way for the construction of Dodonpa, which opened in 2001. Ride experience Moonsault Scramble was known for producing extremely high g-forces on its riders. As of 1998, it was cited by some to exert up to 6.5 Gs on its riders.
