Monterey Grand Prix
The Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey is an IndyCar Series race held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California, United States. The event dates back to 1960, and became an American open-wheel car racing, American open wheel race in 1983. The race was part of the Championship Auto Racing Teams, CART series from 1983 to 2003, and then the Champ Car World Series, CART's successor, for 2004. After a fifteen-year hiatus, the event returned in 2019 IndyCar Series, 2019 as part of the IndyCar Series, replacing Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, Sonoma. Since its inception as an open-wheel race in 1983, the Grand Prix of Monterey has been held at or very near the end of the season for nearly its entire existence. The IndyCar Series, officially known as the NTT IndyCar Series for sponsorship reasons, is the highest class of American open-wheel car racing in the United States, which has been conducted under the auspices of various sanctioning bodies since 1920 after two initial attempts in 1905 and 1916. The series is self-sanctioned by its parent company, IndyCar, IndyCar, LLC., which began in 1996 as the Indy Racing League (IRL) and was created by then Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George as a competitor to Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). 1979 Can-Am Season
The 1979 Can-Am season was the twelfth running of the Sports Car Club of America's prototype-based series and the third running of the revived series. Formula One legend Jacky Ickx was declared champion, winning five of the ten rounds and finishing second at Road Atlanta. Chevrolet again dominated the season. The top chassis builders were Lola, Prophet, and Spyder, with Vern Schuppan finishing third at Watkins Glen in an Elfin and Al Holbert finishing third at Road America in a Hogan. 1979 would also mark the introduction of a second class for prototypes with engines under 2000cc. GoPro Grand Prix Of Sonoma
The IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma was an IndyCar Series race held at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. The USAC Championship Car circuit raced at the circuit in 1970. In 2005, American open wheel racing returned to the circuit with an IndyCar Series event. The 2006 event saw rookie Marco Andretti win his first career race. It marked the record youngest winner (19 years, 5 months, 14 days) of a major open-wheel racing event at the time. The IndyCar Series race utilizes a modified version of the road course, the same used by AMA Superbike. The circuit includes the carousel, making it longer than the NASCAR layout, but shorter than the full course. This course uses turn 7a of the NASCAR course, but skips the hairpin prior to the front straight. 2008 IndyCar Series
The 2008 IndyCar Series was the 13th season of the IndyCar Series. It was the 97th recognized season of top-level American open wheel racing. It began on March 29, 2008, and ended on September 7 after 17 point-scoring races, plus a non-championship event on October 26. The season was historically significant, as IndyCar became the single major open wheel racing series in the United States. 2008 Champ Car Season
The 2008 Champ Car World Series season would have been the 5th season of the Champ Car World Series and 30th season of the series dating back to the 1979 formation of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). It was scheduled to begin on April 20, 2008, and end on November 9. The season was canceled on February 22, 2008, because of the buyout of Champ Car by the rival IndyCar Series, resulting in the unification of American open-wheel racing. As per the conditions of the agreement between series, Champ Car was dissolved as an entity, with IndyCar acquiring the historical records of the series as part of the "non-tangible and tangible assets of Champ Car". The Marlboro Challenge was an All-star game, all-star race in the Championship Auto Racing Teams, CART series race held from 1987 to 1992, sponsored by cigarette brand Marlboro (cigarette), Marlboro. After 1992, the race was discontinued, in part because Phillip Morris reorganized its race sponsorship after the Marlboro Grand Prix of New York fell through. The race was considered a non-points Exhibition game, exhibition race, and did not count towards championship standings or official statistics. Twelve drivers qualified for the 1987 race, although only ten started the race. In the other editions, ten drivers were selected. Formula 5000 (or F5000) was an Open-wheel car, open wheel, single seater auto-racing formula that ran in different series in various regions around the world from 1968 to 1982. Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix
The Course de Monterey is a sports car race held annually at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). The event began in 1950 as a race on the roads of Pebble Beach, California. In 1951, it was added to the new SCCA National Sports Car Championship. When Laguna Seca Raceway was built in 1957, the races moved there. The event fell dormant after the National Championship was discontinued in 1957, but was revived by the SCCA's new United States Road Racing Championship in 1963.
