Monkland Village
Monkland Village is a neighbourhood of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district in the Montreal borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. It is located between Grand Boulevard and the Décarie Expressway/Décarie Boulevard, and between Avenue Somerled and Sherbrooke Street. The neighbourhood derives its name from Avenue Monkland (Monkland Avenue), the commercial street at the heart of it. The Villa Maria metro station is located at the eastern end of Monkland Avenue. Origins Both the neighbourhood and the avenue are named after James Monk, who was the attorney general of Lower Canada, and chief justice to the court of the Queen's Bench from 1804 to 1824. This area in particular became associated with Monk due to the estate he built in 1804 known as ''Monklands''. This estate would later become the Governor General's residence, and was later sold to the Congregation de Notre-Dame who would use the building for the Villa Maria private Catholic school. Villa-Maria is a Montreal Metro station in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves the Orange Line (Montreal Metro), Orange Line. It is located in the Westmount Adjacent area of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood, beside the Décarie Expressway trench. Overview The station is a normal side platform station and has an entrance at its south end. The entrance is located in a bus loop located on the Décarie Autoroute. Villa Maria is a subsidized private Catholic co-educational high school located in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, offering both francophone and anglophone streams. Founded in 1854 as a boarding school for girls, it stopped boarding students in 1966 and opened, in August 2016, to boys in the seventh grade. Today, there are roughly 950 students in the French sector and 800 students in the English sector with an average class size of 34 students. Current tuition as of the 2024–2025 school year is $4,900 with $2,330 in extra mandatory fees. James Monk
Sir James Monk (1745 – November 18, 1826) was Chief Justice of Lower Canada. Monk played a significant role in the abolition of slavery in British North America, when as Chief Justice he rendered a series of decisions regarding escaped slaves that 'while not technically abolishing slavery rendered it innocuous' (i.e. unenforceable).
