The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represents the University of Minnesota in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. Founded in 1882, Minnesota has been a member of the Big Ten Conference since its inception in 1896 as the Western Conference. 1882 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Team
The 1882 Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represented the University of Minnesota in the 1882 college football season. The inaugural Minnesota football team did not have a coach. The first known mention of football at the University of Minnesota was on October 30, 1878 in the Ariel (campus newspaper), Ariel, the student newspaper at the time. It said that "Football has been the all-absorbing amusement for the past few weeks". However, in those days, the only games played were against other Minnesota students. Minnesota's first intercollegiate game which has its results recorded took place at the King's Fair (Minneapolis), King's Fair Ground on September 30, 1882, though some secondary sources may incorrectly give the location as the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and the date as September 29, 1882. Goldy Gopher
Goldy Gopher is the mascot for the University of Minnesota and the associated sports teams, known as the Golden Gophers, as well as a four-time UCA Mascot National Champion (2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018). During the year, Goldy makes over 1000 appearances and is at virtually all home games for University teams, usually wearing the appropriate sporting attire. The mascot is based on the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, colloquially referred to as a “gopher” in Minnesota. Origins Minnesota became known as the "Gopher State" in 1857, the result of a political cartoon ridiculing the $5 million Railroad Loan which helped open up the West. Minnesota–Wisconsin Football Rivalry
The Minnesota–Wisconsin football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers. It is the most-played rivalry in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, with 134 meetings between the two teams. It is also the longest continuously played rivalry in Division I FBS, with an uninterrupted streak of 118 games through the 2024 season. The winner of the game receives Paul Bunyan's Axe, a tradition that started in 1948 after the first trophy, the Slab of Bacon, disappeared after the 1943 game when the Badgers were supposed to turn it over to the Golden Gophers. The Wisconsin Badgers football program represents the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the sport of American football.
