Ministry Of Transportation Building, Jakarta
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation Building is a historic building and a cultural property located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The building is currently the headquarter of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation. The building, established as the headquarter of the Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij (KPM), was the first project of AIA Bureau, the biggest architecture consultant in the Dutch East Indies. History In 1914, Frans Ghijsels designed the Petamboeran hospital for the KPM in Petamburan, Batavia, now Pelni Hospital Jakarta. In the same year, the shipping company also commissioned Ghijsels to design the new headquarter for the KPM on a plot of land at Koningplein Oost 5. This project led to the formation of the private architectural consultant AIA (''Algemeen Ingenieurs- en Architectenbureau''). Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij (Dutch for Royal Packet Navigation Company), better known as KPM, was a Dutch shipping company (1888–1966) in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia. It was the dominant inter-island shipping line in Indonesia during the last half century of the colonial era. Before World War II Foundation of the KPM In 1863 the British Nederlandsch-Indische Stoomvaartmaatschappij (NISM) had won a tender for a number of subsidized shipping lines in the Dutch East Indies. As a consequence the inter island shipping lines got centered on Singapore. Furthermore all but two of the many ships required were built in the United Kingdom. Petamburan is an administrative village in the Tanah Abang district of Indonesia. It has postal code of 10260. The area is 0.90 km2. The population is 32,946 as of 2019. There are 16,900 males and 16,046 females. Origin There are two theories behind this name. One suggests that every European who died, the locals would play the drums. Merdeka Square (Indonesian: ''Medan Merdeka'' or ''Lapangan Merdeka'', formerly nl, Koningsplein, lit. "King's Square") is a large square located in the center of Jakarta, Indonesia. Measuring approximately one square kilometer in area, if the surrounding fields within the Merdeka Square are included, it is considered one of the largest squares in the world. Kota Tua Jakarta (Indonesian for "Jakarta Old Town"), officially known as Kota Tua, is a neighborhood comprising the original downtown area of Jakarta, Indonesia.
