The Ministry of Health () is the public service department of New Zealand responsible for healthcare in New Zealand. It came into existence in its current form in 1993. The organisation was founded in 1901 as the Department of Public Health in 1901, and was renamed to Department of Health in 1922. History Origins The Ministry of Health's origins can be traced back to the Department of Public Health, which was first established in 1901 at the advice of the Central Board of Health. The Department of Public Health assumed responsibility for the provision of Māori people, Māori health services between 1906 and 1909, when Māori medical health services were returned to the-then Te Puni Kokiri, Department of Native Affairs. Te Hiringa Mahara, formerly known as the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission, is a New Zealand independent Crown entity that opened on 9 February 2021 which focuses on promoting mental health and wellbeing as well as providing leadership to the sector. It was established by the Sixth Labour Government with the passage of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission Act 2020. Te Hiringa Mahara was created after a 2018 inquiry into mental health and addiction in New Zealand recommended the establishment of a Commission to provide oversight and monitoring of the mental health sector. District health boards (DHBs) in New Zealand were organisations established by the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 under the Fifth Labour Government of New Zealand, Fifth Labour Government, responsible for ensuring the provision of Healthcare in New Zealand, health and Disability in New Zealand, disability services to populations within a defined geographical area. They existed from 1 January 2001, when the act came into force, to 30 June 2022. The Health Funding Authority, now defunct, was a New Zealand government entity responsible for funding of public health care in New Zealand between 1997 and 2001. History It was formed through the merger of the four Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) as part of the coalition agreement between the New Zealand National Party and New Zealand First following the 1996 general election. The 1999 New Zealand general election was held on 27 November 1999 to determine the composition of the 46th New Zealand Parliament.
