''Mind Hive'' is the seventeenth studio album from English art punk band Wire, released on 24 January 2020 by Pinkflag. The release was preceded by a music video for "Cactused" made up of clips from the forthcoming documentary ''People in a Film'' and streaming audio for "Primed and Ready". They also announced a brief tour of North America to promote the recording. Critical reception Review aggregator AnyDecentMusic? assess the critical consensus as a 7.7 out of 10. ''Brooklyn Vegan'' praised the album saying Wire "have honed a sound that pulls from all periods of the band." Alexis Petridis of ''The Guardian'' gave the album four out of five stars and said, "If ''Mind Hive'' were the debut by a hot new band, you suspect what's left of the music press would be doing their nut over it." Wire (band)
Wire are a British rock band, formed in London in October 1976 by Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar), George Gill (lead guitar) and Robert Grey (musician), Robert Grey (aka Robert Gotobed; drums). They were originally associated with the punk rock scene, appearing on ''The Roxy London WC2'' album, and were instrumental to the development of post-punk, while their debut album, ''Pink Flag'', was influential for hardcore punk. Wire are considered a definitive and highly influential art punk and post-punk band, due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound and obscure lyrical themes. Jon Wozencroft
Jon Wozencroft (born 1 June 1958, in Epsom, England) is a graphic designer, author and instructor. Wozencroft founded Touch, an independent multimedia publishing company. Between 1982 and 1986 Touch "released around 15 products, concentrating on producing interactive, audiovisual magazines such as ''Feature Mist'' and ''Touch Travel'', both of which sold over 5000 copies without any advertising (which we could not afford)." Touch is still active today. In 1988 Wozencroft's book on his colleague Neville Brody was published as ''The Graphic Language of Neville Brody''. Wozencroft and Brody went on to found and publish ''FUSE'' – an experimental publication of graphics and experimental fonts. According to his biography, Wozencroft has had extensive experience teaching design. He has been a lecturer at Central St Martins College of Art & Design and at the Royal College of Art, both in London. Mastering is a form of audio post production which is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device called a master recording, the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). In recent years, digital masters have become usual, although analog masters—such as audio tapes—are still being used by the manufacturing industry, particularly by a few engineers who specialize in analog mastering. Mastering requires critical listening; however, software tools exist to facilitate the process. Results depend upon the intent of the engineer, their skills, the accuracy of the speaker monitors, and the listening environment. Hurdy Gurdy
The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound by a hand-turned crank, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin (or nyckelharpa) bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses ''tangents''—small wedges, typically made of wood or metal—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible. Most hurdy-gurdies have multiple drone strings, which give a constant pitch accompaniment to the melody, resulting in a sound similar to that of bagpipes. For this reason, the hurdy-gurdy is often used interchangeably or along with bagpipes. Matthew Simms
Matthew Simms is an English guitarist best known for his work with the band Wire. Simms formed the band It Hugs Back with schoolmates Paul Michael, Jack Theedom and Will Blackaby. Their debut album, ''Inside Your Guitar'', was released in 2009. Their second album, ''Laughing Party'', was released in 2012. In 2010 Simms joined Wire for their '' Red Barked Tree'' tour initially as a touring guitarist but then as a full member of the band. The first Wire album Simms appeared on was 2013's '' Change Becomes Us''. He went on to appear on: ''Wire'', '' Nocturnal Koreans'', '' Silver/Lead,'' and ''Mind Hive'' (2020). Tenor Guitar
The tenor guitar or four-string guitar is a slightly smaller, four-string relative of the steel-string acoustic guitar or electric guitar. The instrument was initially developed in its acoustic form by Gibson and C.F. Martin so that players of the four-string tenor banjo could double on guitar. Construction Tenor guitars are four-stringed instruments normally made in the shape of a guitar, or sometimes with a lute-like pear shaped body or, more rarely, with a round banjo-like wooden body. Stylophone
The Stylophone is a miniature analog synthesizer played with a stylus. Invented in 1967 by Brian Jarvis, it entered production in 1968, manufactured by Dubreq. Some three million Stylophones were sold, mostly as children's toys, but they were occasionally used by professional musicians such as John Lennon, Kraftwerk and David Bowie. It was relaunched in 2007 by the toy company Re:, which was created in partnership with a rebuilt Dubreq and released several new models. It was first made in London. Original models The Stylophone consists of a metal keyboard made of printed circuit board and is played by touching it with a stylus. Robert Grey (musician)
Robert Grey (born 21 April 1951) is an English musician best known as the drummer for Wire. He is sometimes credited as Robert Gotobed. Career In 1973, Grey joined his first band, an R&B group called the Snakes, as vocalist. The Snakes released one single, "Teenage Head". After the group folded, Grey began teaching himself to drum. He has been Wire's regular drummer since their start in 1976; at first he used the stage name 'Robert Gotobed'. The group broke up in 1980, reforming in 1985. Grey left Wire in 1990, after the release of the album '' Manscape'', because of Wire's increasing use of sequencers, computers, and drum machines: he began to feel uncomfortable with the computer-based environment. Graham Lewis
Graham Lewis (born Edward Graham Lewis, 22 February 1953) is an English musician. He is best known as a bassist, songwriter, and vocalist with punk rock/post-punk band Wire, of which he has been a core member since founding in 1976. Biography On Wire's first studio album Graham Lewis was credited as ''Lewis''; he continued to be known by this abbreviation; however some subsequent record credits give his full name. Graham studied textiles at Middlesex Polytechnic in London in the early seventies. He later switched to fashion but formed the band before he was able to have a substantial career in this world. Rough Trade (shops)
Rough Trade is a retail chain of record shops in the United Kingdom and the United States with headquarters in London. The first Rough Trade shop was opened in 1976 by Geoff Travis in the Ladbroke Grove district of West London. Travis reportedly took the name from the Canadian art punk/new wave music, new wave band Rough Trade (band), Rough Trade. In 1978, the shop spawned Rough Trade Records, which later became the label of bands from The Smiths to The Libertines. In 1982, the two separated and the shop remains an independent entity from the label, although links between the two are strong.
