Milton of Campsie Football Club was a football team from Milton of Campsie, Stirlingshire. Shaughraun The club was formed in 1876 under the name Shaughraun; it was the second senior club founded in Stirlingshire, after Bonnybridge Grasshoppers. The name is Irish for "wanderers" and was the name of a play which had been a fixture in London theatres from 1875. The spelling caused problems for newspapers as it was often rendered as Shaughran. It was one of 36 clubs to join the Scottish Football Association in September 1877. Shaughraun entered the Scottish Cup twice under its original name. In 1877–78, in the only tie in the Stirlingshire district, it lost 2–1 at Clifton & Strathfillan; there was a dispute as to the amount of time played when the game was brought to a halt, but the score stood. The 1879–80 Scottish Cup – officially the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup – was the seventh season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. With 142 entrants, this season saw the largest number of teams to compete for the trophy since its inception. Three-time defending champions Vale of Leven lost their first match in the competition for four seasons when they were knocked out in the first round, losing 4–3 to rivals Dumbarton. Queen's Park regained the trophy as they won the competition for the fourth time after beating Thornliebank 3–0 in the final on 21 February 1880. Helensburgh ( ; ) is a town on the north side of the Firth of Clyde in Scotland, situated at the mouth of the Gareloch. Historically in Dunbartonshire, it became part of Argyll and Bute following local government reorganisation in 1996. Milton of Campsie is a village formerly in the county of Stirlingshire, but now in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland roughly north of Glasgow. Nestling at the foot of the Campsie Fells, it is neighboured by Kirkintilloch and Lennoxtown. History The old church was built over the grave of St Machan around 1170 making it one of the earliest churches in Scotland. The railway station was built here in 1848 and originally simply called Milton Station. In 1912 it was renamed Milton of Campsie Station and it closed in 1951. Overview The village expanded greatly in the 1970s with the addition of modern housing estates by Barratt Developments, Barratt and Bellway, the latter being more extensive.
