A military museum or war museum is an institution dedicated to the preservation and education of the significance of wars, conflicts, and military actions. These museums serve as repositories of artifacts (not least weapons), documents, photographs, and other memorabilia related to the military and war. Some of these institutions may also be used as a war memorial for a particular country or conflict. These institutions vary in their scope and focus, with some museums dedicated to a specific national or regional context and chronicling the military history of a particular country or region, while other museums may concentrate on a particular conflict, era, service, technology (like an artillery museum), or unit (like a regimental museum). Atlantic Wall Open-air Museum
The Atlantic Wall Open Air Museum () is a military museum near Ostend in Belgium which preserves fortifications of the Atlantic Wall dating to the First and Second World Wars. The section of fortifications owned by the museum - over 60 bunkers and two miles of trenches - is among the best preserved sections of the defensive line in Europe. The fortifications survive because they were built on land belonging to Prince Charles, Count of Flanders who decided that they should not be destroyed after the war, but be kept as a national monument. Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum
The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is an industrial museum in Lithgow, New South Wales. It is located on the original Commonwealth Small Arms Factory site and houses archives dating back to the founding of the factory in 1912, as well as a large number of historical small arms and artefacts related to the operation of the original Lithgow Small Arms Factory. It was officially opened on the 15th of October 1998, after a number of former employees of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory objected to the privatisation of the former Factory property. Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917
The Passchendaele Museum (until 2022 known as Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917) in Zonnebeke, Belgium, is a museum devoted to the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres). In this battle in only 100 days, almost 500,000 men were killed to gain only eight kilometres of ground. The museum is housed in the historic château grounds of Zonnebeke and focuses on the material aspects of the First World War. History The history of the Passchendaele Museum started in 1987. It featured the first exhibition about the Third Battle of Ypres (1917). This exhibition consisted of visual materials from the Imperial War Museum. The Lange Max Museum (LMM) is devoted to the German Batterie Pommern, 38 cm SK L/45 "Max" gun and the German occupation of Koekelare and the nearby area in World War I. The focus on the German side of the war makes it a unique museum in Belgium. The museum is named after the nickname of the German gun "Lange Max", which was one of the biggest guns in the world in 1917, and is located in Koekelare. The museum was opened in October 2014 by the Minister-President of Flanders, Geert Bourgeois. It is located on a domain called Site Lange Max, which includes a farmyard. The In Flanders Fields Museum is a museum in Ypres (Ieper), Belgium, dedicated to the study of the World War I, First World War. It occupies the second floor of the Ypres Cloth Hall, Cloth Hall (Lakenhalle) on the market square in the city centre. The building was largely destroyed by artillery during the war, but was afterwards reconstructed. In 1998 the original Ypres Salient Memorial Museum was refurbished and renamed In Flanders Fields Museum after the In Flanders Fields, famous poem by Canadian John McCrae. The Liberation War Museum () is a museum at Agargaon in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, which commemorates the Bangladesh Liberation War that led to the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan. Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre
The Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre was the maritime museum of the Royal Australian Navy. The centre opened on 4 October 2005 and was located within the then Public Access Area on the northern end of the Garden Island naval base in Sydney. In 2021 it was permanently closed due to access issues within the working naval base. The need for such a facility was first recognised in 1922, by Vice Admiral Sir William Creswell who suggested the building of a museum to permanently display the Australian Navy's already rich and unique heritage. Royal Australian Armoured Corps Memorial And Army Tank Museum
The Royal Australian Armoured Corps Memorial and Army Tank Museum is located at Puckapunyal, an Australian Army training facility and base 10 km west of Seymour, in central Victoria, south-eastern Australia. The base is the home of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. The museum closed in December 2022 for redevelopment, but is expected to re-open in 2025. RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre
RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre is a military museum at RAAF Base Wagga, on the Sturt Highway, Forest Hill, New South Wales. The heritage centre has indoor and outdoor displays of aircraft, memorabilia and photographs relating to the Royal Australian Air Force in the Riverina. History The RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre opened in June 1995 with items from RAAF Base Wagga and items which were donated by the community. RAAF Museum is the official museum of the Royal Australian Air Force located at RAAF Williams Point Cook, Victoria, Australia.
