The Michigan Wolverines women's water polo team represents the University of Michigan in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I competition. College water polo became a varsity sport at the University of Michigan in 2001. Marcelo Leonardi was the head coach since 2015. Collegiate Water Polo Association
The Collegiate Water Polo Association is a conference of colleges and universities in the Eastern United States that sponsor 19 men's teams and 17 women's teams that compete in varsity water polo. The winners of the conference tournaments earn one of the four spots in the NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship and one of the eight spots in the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship. The CWPA sponsors club team competition in 17 men's divisions and 13 women's divisions across the United States. History The conference was founded in the early 1970s as the Mid Atlantic Conference by Dick Russell, the swimming and water polo coach at Bucknell university with member schools from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Canham Natatorium
The Canham Natatorium is a swimming facility on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The facility is used by the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving and women's water polo teams. History The Natatorium was completed in 1988 and is dedicated to former Michigan athletic director Don Canham, who retired in June 1988. The complex is 59,000 square feet and features a 50-meter pool, eight lanes wide, while the diving well features an Olympic Tower with a 10-meter diving platform, one and three-meter springboards, and a hot tub. In 2002, Michigan dedicated the diving pool in Canham Natatorium to diving coach Dick Kimball, who retired after the season following 43 years of service for the university. Kimball coached nine Olympic medalists, five NCAA Champions, and a record 33 Big Ten Conference championship teams. Michigan Wolverines
The Michigan Wolverines comprise 29 varsity sports teams at the University of Michigan. These teams compete in the NCAA's Division I and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except women's water polo, which competes in the NCAA inter-divisional Collegiate Water Polo Association. Team colors are maize and blue, though these are different shades of "maize" and "blue" from those used by the university at large. The winged helmet is a recognized icon of Michigan Athletics. In 11 of the previous 20 years (as of the end of 2018–19), Michigan has finished in the top five of the NACDA Directors' Cup, a list compiled by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics that charts institutions' overall success in college sports. NCAA Division I (D-I) is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States, which accepts players globally.
