Michael John O'Brien
The Hon. Michael John O'Brien (19 September 1851 – 26 October 1940) was a railway builder, industrialist and philanthropist. He was named to the Senate of Canada in 1918. He was a founder of the town of Renfrew, Ontario. He was instrumental in the early history of professional ice hockey in Eastern Canada. Early life O'Brien was born in Lochaber, Nova Scotia, Lochaber, Nova Scotia to Irish people, Irish immigrant John O'Brien (1799 - 1869) and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Cleary O'Brien (1832 - 1900), daughter of Michael Cleary and Elizabeth Foley. He attended school until Grade 8, quitting at age 14 for a water boy position at a railway construction site. Fred La Rose
Alfred "Fred" La Rose, also known as "Fred Rose" and "Frederick LaRose" (c. 1870 - September 1940), was a blacksmith from Quebec who discovered silver on September 15, 1903 at the future site of Cobalt, Ontario. He is often referred to as the "Father of Cobalt," an unofficial title shared by the province of Ontario's first geologist, Dr. W. G. Miller (1866 - 1925). Silver had first been discovered near Long Lake (later Cobalt Lake, Ontario), during the construction of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway (T&NO) from North Bay, by J. H. McKinley and Ernest Darragh, which then became the McKinley-Darragh Mine. Darragh and McKinley had made their find on August 7, 1903, while supplying railway ties, and kept it secret at the onset, while quickly filing their new claim on August 14. Eastern Canada Hockey Association
The Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA) was a men's amateur – later professional – ice hockey league in Canada that played four seasons. It was founded on December 11, 1905 with the top clubs from two other leagues: four from the Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL) and two from the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL). National Hockey Association
The National Hockey Association (NHA), initially the National Hockey Association of Canada Limited, was a professional ice hockey organization with teams in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. It is the direct predecessor of today's National Hockey League (NHL), and many of the business processes of the NHL today are based on the NHA. Founded in 1909 by Ambrose O'Brien, the NHA introduced six-man hockey by removing the Rover (ice hockey), rover position in 1911. During its lifetime, the league coped with competition for players with the rival Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), the enlistment of players for World War I and disagreements between owners. Haileybury, Ontario
Temiskaming Shores is a city in the Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It was created by the amalgamation of the town of New Liskeard, the town of Haileybury, and the township of Dymond in 2004. The city had a total population of 9,634 in the Canada 2021 Census. Temiskaming Shores is Ontario's second-smallest city, in terms of population, after Dryden. Haileybury is the seat of Timiskaming District. The constituent communities, alongside the neighbouring town of Cobalt, have been collectively referred to as "Tri-Towns" since before amalgamation. Ambrose O'Brien
John Ambrose O'Brien (May 27, 1885 – April 24, 1968) was a Canadian industrialist and sports team owner. He was a founder of the National Hockey Association (NHA), owner of the Renfrew Millionaires and the founding owner of the Montreal Canadiens professional ice hockey team. Biography O'Brien was born in Renfrew, Ontario, the son of Michael John O'Brien, a Canadian businessman, and later one of the owners of mines in Cobalt, Ontario during the Cobalt silver rush. James Whitney (politician)
Sir James Pliny Whitney (October 2, 1843 – September 25, 1914) was a Canadian politician and lawyer in the province of Ontario. He served as Conservative member of the legislature for Dundas in Eastern Ontario from 1888 and as the sixth premier of Ontario from 1905 until his death in 1914. He is the only premier of Ontario to have died while in office.
