Michael Howe, The Terror Of Van Diemen's Land
''Michael Howe, The Terror of Van Diemen's Land'' is an 1821 British play by John H. Amherst about the bushranger Michael Howe. It was the first play ever written about Tasmania. It premiered at London's Royal Coburg Theatre in April 1821. The play was revived in October 1821 as a benefit for the actor Henry Sloman (1793-1873). No surviving manuscript of the play is known to exist. The play was performed in Hobart in 1845. An advertisement for this said the play ran for more than 300 performances at "The Surrey Theatre" but this may be a reference to another play about Howe, '' Van Dieman's Land''. Background Michael Howe was executed in 1818. That year saw publication of the book ''Michael Howe : the last and worst of the bushrangers of Van Diemen's Land''. The ''Hobart Town Gazette'' was established in 1816 in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (known as Tasmania since 1856) as ''The Hobart Town Gazette and Southern Reporter''. In 1821 the name was changed to the ''Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen's Land Advertiser''. In 1825 the title was split, with the government authorised publication remaining the ''Hobart Town Gazette'', and the original editor launching the ''Colonial Times, and Tasmanian Advertiser'' . From 1882 it was known as the ''Hobart Gazette'' and from 1907 as the ''Tasmanian Government Gazette''. Michael Howe (bushranger)
Michael Howe (1787 – 21 October 1818) was a British convict who became a notorious bushranger and gang leader in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), Australia. Early life Howe was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, son of Thomas Howe and his wife Elizabeth. He served two years on a merchant vessel at Hull before deserting to join the navy as a seaman. He later owned his own small craft. Transportation On 31 July 1811 he was sentenced to seven years transportation for robbing a miller on the highway. He arrived in Van Diemen's Land in October 1812 on '' Indefatigable'', and was assigned to John Ingle, a merchant and grazier. Howe refused the assignment, declaring that "having served the King, he would be no man's slave". He escaped, and joined a large party of escaped convicts in the bush. Henry Sloman (1793 – August 1873) was an English actor, singer, and theatre proprietor. Biography Henry Sloman was born into a Jewish family in Rochester, England, in 1793. Sloman gained prominence as a performer in pantomimes and melodramas at the Coburn Theatre in London, then under the management of .
