Mexican Olympic Committee
The Mexican Olympic Committee () (COM) is the organization that represents Mexican athletes in the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games. It was created and formally recognized by the IOC in 1923. The organization is currently directed by María José Alcalá. The Mexican Olympic Committee is headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico. History As early as the 1900 Universal Exposition of Paris, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had the idea of Mexico entering the next Olympic Games. In 1901, Coubertin met with the Mexican ambassador in Belgium, where they decided to form the National Olympic Committee of Mexico. Arturo Barrios
Arturo Barrios Flores (born December 12, 1962, in Mexico City) is a Mexican and American long-distance runner who set the 10,000 m world record in 1989, the one hour world record in 1991, and the 20,000 m world record en route to the one hour run world record. Career Barrios finished in fifth place in the 10,000 metres at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He is a former world record holder at the 10,000 m (27:08.23, set on August 18, 1989, at the Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) in Berlin, Germany). Barrios' record was not broken until 1993 when Richard Chelimo ran 27:07.91 in Stockholm. This mark stood as the North American record until May 1, 2010, and still stands as the national record of Mexico. Synchronized Swimming At The 1992 Summer Olympics
At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, two events in synchronized swimming were contested, both for women only. Two gold medals were awarded in solo synchronized swimming after a judge inadvertently entered the score of "8.7" instead of the intended "9.7" in the computerized scoring system for one of Sylvie Fréchette's figures. This error ultimately placed Fréchette second, leaving Kristen Babb-Sprague for the gold medal. Following an appeal FINA awarded Fréchette a gold medal, replacing her silver medal and leaving the two swimmers both with gold. This was the last time that solo synchronized swimming was included in the Olympic program before being replaced in favor of a team event.
