New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House, Sydney, Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by Constituency, single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the Optional Preferential Voting, optional Instant-runoff voting, preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals Member of the Legislative Assembly#Australia, MP after their names. Bruce MacCarthy
Bruce Edward MacCarthy (15 October 1948 — 25 February 2025) was an Australian politician. He was the Liberal Party member for Strathfield in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 1999. MacCarthy was born in Denistone, a suburb of Sydney, to parents Thornton and Constance. He attended Homebush Boys' High School, graduating in 1965. He attended the University of Sydney from 1966 to 1968, where he received a Bachelor of Science (Pure Mathematics), and joined the Liberal Party on 14 March 1967. On 8 August 1974 he married Leanne Gaye Hilder at Concord, with whom he had three daughters. He received a Bachelor of Economics (Public Finance) in 1976 from the University of New England, and worked as a public sector manager. Lorna Stone
Lorna June Stone, (born 25 June 1938), is a former Australian politician. She was the Liberal Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Sutherland from 1997 to 1999. Stone was born Lorna Nicholson to parents Alfred and Erla. She was a drama teacher, having received her teacher's certificate from Sydney Teachers College before also attending Trinity College London. In 1974, she joined the Sylvania branch of the Liberal Party, and remained active in the party thereafter, holding various positions including campaign secretary and chairman of the local government executive. She married Keith Stone, with whom she had four children. She was also a Sutherland Shire Councillor from 1991 to 1995. Chris Downy
Christopher John Downy (born 29 March 1955) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal Party member for Sutherland in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1997, and Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing from 1993 to 1995. Biograpgt Downy was born on 29 March 1955, the eldest son of Gerald and Marie Downy. He was educated at Saint Patrick’s Christian Brothers College Sutherland. He attended the University of Sydney, where he received his Bachelor of Arts (Hons), and Sydney Teachers College, where he received a Diploma of Education. He was subsequently a secondary school teacher. He joined the Liberal Party in 1974 and was active in local politics. Rob Oakeshott
Robert James Murray Oakeshott (born 14 December 1969) is a retired Australian politician. He was the independent Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Lyne in New South Wales from 2008, when he won the 2008 Lyne by-election, until his retirement in 2013. Oakeshott described his views as economically conservative and socially progressive. Oakeshott began his political career in state politics. Originally elected as the National Party candidate for the state seat of Port Macquarie in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1996, he left the party to become an Independent in 2002. Oakeshott retained the seat until 2008, when he resigned to contest the federal seat of Lyne, which he won with a large margin. He retained Lyne at the 2010 election, again with a large margin. Wendy Machin
Wendy Susan Machin (born 14 October 1958 in Wingham, New South Wales), is a former Australian politician. She was the first woman member of the Nationals elected to the New South Wales Parliament and was Minister for Consumer Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Roads and Assisting the Minister for Transport between 1993–1995. She was later president of the National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) from 2008 to 2014. The 1996 Pittwater state by-election was held on 25 May 1996 for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Pittwater following the retirement of sitting member, Jim Longley (). On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Orange, Southern Highlands and Strathfield. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National parties, with the exception of Clarence. John Brogden (politician)
John Gilbert Brogden (born 28 March 1969) is an Australian businessman, philanthropist, and former politician. He was a Liberal Party member for Pittwater in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from May 1996 until his resignation in August 2005, and served as the leader of the opposition in New South Wales from 2002 to 2005. After politics, Brogden served as the chairman and CEO of various organisations in the financial services and property sectors.
