Members Of The Australian Senate, 1983–1985
This is a list of members of the Australian Senate from 1983 to 1985. It consisted of ten senators for each of the six states of Australia and two senators representing each of the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. All members were elected at the 1983 election following a double dissolution of both houses of parliament, rather than the normal case of only half of the state senators facing election. Australian Government
The Australian Government, also known as the Commonwealth Government or simply as the federal government, is the national executive government of Australia, a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy. Peter Baume
Peter Erne Baume, Order of Australia, AC (born 30 January 1935) is a retired Australian doctor and politician. He was a Australian Senate, Senator for New South Wales from 1974 to 1991, representing the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Party. He served as Minister for Indigenous Australians, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs (1980–1982) and Minister for Education (Australia), Minister for Education (1982–1983) in the Fraser government. Doug McClelland
Douglas McClelland (born 5 August 1926) is an Australian former politician who served as a Senator for New South Wales from 1962 to 1987, representing the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He was Minister for the Media (1972–1975) and Special Minister of State (1975) in the Whitlam government, and ended his political career as President of the Senate (1983–1987). He resigned from the Senate to become High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (1987–1991). McClelland is the earliest elected Senator and federal Labor parliamentarian still alive, and along with Paul Keating is the last surviving minister who served under Gough Whitlam. Warwick Parer
Warwick Raymond Parer, AM (6 April 193614 March 2014) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Queensland from 1984 to 2000. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served as Minister for Resources and Energy in the Howard government from 1996 to 1998. Early life Parer was born in Wau in the Australian-administered Territory of New Guinea (present-day Papua New Guinea). His uncle Damien Parer was a war photographer who was killed by the Japanese in 1944. Peter Durack
Peter Drew Durack, QC (20 October 1926– 13 July 2008) was an Australian politician, representing the Liberal Party. He rose to become Attorney-General of Australia. He served in the Senate from 1 July 1971 to 30 June 1993. From 1987 to 1989, he was a joint Father of the Senate along with Arthur Gietzelt, and from 1989 until his retirement, he held that title alone. Don Chipp
Donald Leslie Chipp, AO (21 August 1925 – 28 August 2006) was an Australian politician who was the inaugural leader of the Australian Democrats, leading the party from 1977 to 1986. He began his career as a member of the Liberal Party, winning election to the House of Representatives in 1960 and serving as a government minister for a cumulative total of six years. Chipp left the Liberals in 1977 and was soon persuaded to lead a new party, the Democrats who, he famously proclaimed in 1980, would "keep the bastards honest". Fred Chaney
Frederick Michael Chaney, AO (born 28 October 1941) is an Australian former politician who was deputy leader of the Liberal Party from 1989 to 1990 and served as a minister in the Fraser government. He was a Senator for Western Australia from 1974 to 1990, and then served a single term in the House of Representatives from 1990 to 1993. Chaney was born in Perth, the son of Sir Frederick Chaney.
