Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A., branded as MSC, is an international shipping line founded by Gianluigi Aponte in Italy in 1970. The company is owned by the Aponte family with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, since 1978. It is the world's largest container shipping company by both fleet size and cargo capacity, controlling 20% of global container capacity as of July 2024. As of March 2025, MSC operates about 900 cargo vessels with an intake capacity of . MSC subsidiaries operate rail freight transport in Portugal and Spain, cruise ships, and cargo aircraft. ''MSC Oscar'', and sister ships ''MSC Zoe'' and '' MSC Oliver'', are large container ships. Christened on 8 January 2015, ''MSC Oscar'' was recognised as the largest container ship in the world; until then '' CSCL Globe'', inaugurated in November 2014, had been the largest. MS ''Achille Lauro'' was a cruise ship based in Naples, Italy. It was built between 1939 and 1947 as the ocean liner ''Willem Ruys'' for Royal Rotterdam Lloyd. In 1965 Achille Lauro bought the ship, had it converted into a cruise ship, and renamed it after himself. In 1985 it was Achille Lauro hijacking, hijacked by members of the Palestine Liberation Front.
