Meatworks and Wharf Site is a heritage-listed former abattoir and wharf at Settlement Road, St Lawrence, Queensland, St Lawrence, Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1870s to 1890s. It is also known as Broadsound Meat Company, Broadsound Packing Co Ltd, and Newport Meatworks Company. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 February 2001. History The former meatworks and wharf site is thought to be established in the 1860s as a boiling down works. By 1893, the meatworks had been established and remained in operation until around 1911. The St Lawrence area was settled by 1860, when Macartney formed Waverley Station. Around the same time, John Mackay (Australian pioneer), John Mackay was travelling in the area. The meatworks was one of the largest projects undertaken in the history of St Lawrence. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. Early life Thomas McIlwraith was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1835, one of four sons of John McIlwraith, plumber and shipowner, and his wife Janet Hamilton ''née'' Howat. Broadsound Divisional Board
Shire of Broadsound was a local government area in the Capricornia region of Queensland, Australia. The Shire, administered from the town of St Lawrence, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1879 until 2008, when it was amalgamated with the Shires of Belyando and Nebo to form the Isaac Region. History On 11 November 1879, the Broadsound Division was established as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 1146. On 3 March 1892, part of subdivision 2 of the Broadsound Division was transferred to subdivision 3 of the Gogango Division. Alligator Creek Meatworks is an important historical business in Queensland contributing to processing of food for the growing population and processing meet while the meat and cattle industry expanded the economy of the local area and of Australia with the introduction of meat exportation.
