The mayor of Regina is head of Regina City Council, the governing body of Regina, the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The 36th and current mayor of the city of Regina is Chad Bachynski, who was first elected in the 2024 municipal election. The following is a list of mayors of Regina, including those who served as mayor of the town of Regina between 1884 and 1903. From 1920 to 1926, Regina mayors were elected using instant-runoff voting. All other times a first past the post system was used. Flag Of Regina
The flag of Regina is the banner representing the city of Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The flag is composed of a horizontal List of flags by design#Bicolour, bicolour of yellow and blue accompanied by a crown in top left corner. It was presented to the city on September 14, 1992, by the Governor General of Canada, Governor General at the time. Prior to 1992, it was purple. That flag had a royal connection reflecting the city's royal roots. However, the flag was unofficial. History The current flag was adopted at the meeting of 29 June 1992. Daniel Mowat
Daniel Alexander Mowat (May 9, 1848 – September 19, 1923 ) was a merchant and political figure in Saskatchewan (then the Northwest Territories), Canada. He represented South Regina in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1891 to 1898 as a Conservative. He was born in Ottawa, Canada West, the son of Alex Mowat, of Scottish descent. In 1871, he married Amelia M. Hoy. Mowat was a member of the Ottawa public school board. He came to the Northwest Territories in 1880 and opened the first store in Regina in 1882. Mowat served on the Regina town council and was mayor from 1886 to 1887. With his brother Alex, also a partner in the Regina store, Mowat owned a large horse ranch near the current village of Avonlea. While a member of the assembly, Mowat proposed that English be the sole language of instruction in schools in the Northwest Territories. Walter Davy Cowan
Walter Davy Cowan, D.D.S., (December 31, 1865 – September 28, 1934) was a Canadian politician in Saskatchewan and Ku Klux Klan member. Cowan served as Mayor of Regina and served as Conservative- Unionist Member of Parliament for Regina from 1917 to 1921 and then as the Conservative MP for Long Lake from 1930 until his death. A dentist by profession, Cowan was born in Guelph, Canada West, to Scottish immigrants. After his early schooling in Guelph, Cowan attended the University of Maryland, graduating with a degree in dentistry in 1888. In 1889, he moved to Regina in what was then the Northwest Territories and was one of the first dentists in the region. He organized the first dental association in Canada, the Dental College of the Northwest Territories (later the Dental College of Saskatchewan) and served as its president until 1913. James Balfour (mayor)
James Balfour, (January 4, 1867 – April 6, 1947) was an educator, lawyer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He served as mayor of Regina, Saskatchewan in 1915 and 1931. He was born in Mount Forest, Ontario, the son of William Balfour, a native of Scotland, and Agnes Martin, and was educated there. He taught school in Saskatchewan for a time. In 1883, he went to Calgary, Alberta, where he was employed in lumbering for two years. He returned to Regina in 1885, teaching school there and then in Battleford. He began the study of law in 1892 and was called to the bar for the Northwest Territories in 1895. In 1892, he married Agnes Hayes. In 1911, he was named King's Counsel. He served as a member of the board for the Regina Hospital from 1902 to 1905, as a member of the board for Regina Collegiate Institute for over 15 years and was president of the YMCA from 1907 to 1912. Henry Laird
Henry Willoughby Laird (January 4, 1868 – September 30, 1940) was a journalist, wholesale merchant and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He sat for Regina division in the Senate of Canada from 1917 to 1940. He was born in Port Dover, Ontario, the son of the Reverend William H. Laird and Elizabeth C. Burke, and was educated at the Jarvis Street Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto. Laird worked as a journalist for ten years, spending three years as a press correspondent in the Ontario legislature and Canadian House of Commons. He married Lillian Blanche Defoe in 1888. In 1901, he came west to serve as private secretary to Frederick W. A. G. Haultain. After leaving that position, he then established a wholesale and distribution business in Regina, the first wholesale business established there. He was Mayor of Regina in 1904 and 1905. William Thomas Mollard (May 5, 1855 – May 4, 1931) was a contractor and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was mayor of Regina from 1900 to 1901. He was born near Aurora, Canada West, the son of James Mollard. Francis Nicholson Darke
Francis Nicholson Darke (October 25, 1863 – July 17, 1940) was a leading citizen of Regina, Saskatchewan and served as Mayor of Regina, Member of Parliament and as a prominent businessman. He was born near Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on his family's farm, remaining there until his late 20s when he decided to move to Western Canada. He arrived in Regina in 1891 and settled there permanently after returning to PEI to marry. He partnered with fellow islander Pople Balderson to raise livestock on a farm outside of Regina. Later, the two men purchased a butcher's shop in town and were soon able to obtain contracts with residential schools and the North-West Mounted Police. Darke invested his earnings to purchase several blocks of land in town from the Canadian Pacific Railway. Robert Martin (Canadian Politician)
Robert Martin (January 14, 1858 – August 1, 1942) was a pharmacist and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was mayor of Regina in 1894 and from 1913 to 1914. He was born in Mount Forest, Canada West, the son of John Martin and Jean Monroe, both immigrants from Scotland. After completing his education, Martin worked as a clerk in a local pharmacy and completed his education in pharmacy in 1876. He came to Regina in 1882, settling there the following year and worked in a drug store there until 1888, when he went into business on his own. Martin married Helen McNeish in 1883. He helped establish the North West Territories Pharmaceutical Association and served as its first examiner.
