Mauritian General Election, 1976
General elections were held in Mauritius on 20 December 1976. They were the first general elections to be held since independence on 12 March 1968 and came nine years after the previous elections in 1967. Although elections had been scheduled for 1972, they were cancelled by the Labour Party–Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate–Muslim Committee of Action coalition government due to political unrest. The year prior to these elections was marked by the May 1975 Students protest riots. The Mauritian Militant Movement won the most seats, but a coalition government was formed by the Independence Party (a coalition of the Labour Party, Muslim Committee of Action and Independent Forward Bloc) and the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate. Around 400 candidates representing thirty-one parties contested the election, but only three parties won seats. Voter turnout was 88%. National Assembly Of Mauritius
The National Assembly () is Mauritius's unicameral legislature, which was called the Legislative Assembly from 1968 until 1992, when the country became a republic. Prior to 1968 and under British Mauritius, British rule it was known as the Legislative Council. The Constitution of Mauritius provides for the parliament of Mauritius to consist of the President and the National Assembly. The parliament of Mauritius is modelled after the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy, where members of parliament are voted in at regular general elections, on the basis of a first past the post system. Harisun Boodhoo more commonly known as Harish Boodhoo, (born in Belle Terre, Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius on 12 September 1946) is a Mauritian political figure who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius from 11 June 1982 to 21 August 1983. He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) in 1976, 1982 and 1983 in Rivière des Anguilles and Souillac (Constituency No. 13). Early life Lutchmeeparsadsing Ramsahok (also known as ''Lutchmeeparsad Ramsewak'' or ''Lutchmeeparsad Ramsewok'') was born in a Hindu family in Mare d'Albert, Mauritius. Sir Satcam Boolell GCSK QC (11 September 1920 – 23 March 2006) was a Mauritian politician who served as member of the Legislative Assembly in Mauritius. He died on 23 March 2006, in Curepipe. He was also known as "Somduth" by his peers and family members. Early life and education Born in 1920 on the Gros Billot sugar estate (between New Grove and GrosBois in Grand Port, to Sahadewoo Boolell and Cossilah Choony, Satcam Boolell grew up with five siblings. In the mid-1800s his grandfather had migrated from the village of Singarmau located in Jaunpore, now a district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Sir Rabindrah Ghurburrun, GOSK (1928–2008) was the first vice president of Mauritius from 1992 to 1997. He started his political career as a member of the Mauritius Labour Party. However, he was appointed by the Mauritian Militant Movement-Militant Socialist Movement coalition government as vice president while the Labour Party was in the opposition. Cassam Uteem, GCSK (born 22 March 1941, Port Louis) is a Mauritian political figure who served as the second president of Mauritius from 30 June 1992 to 15 February 2002. Jack Bizlall (born 23 July 1946) is a trade unionist, teacher and former elected member of parliament (MP) of Mauritius. He is also known as Jacques Brizlall. Early life and career Jack Bizlall grew up in Médine. His first name was given to him in honour of his father's friend who was killed in action as a soldier during World War II. Mauritian Militant Socialist Movement
The Mauritian Militant Socialist Movement () was a political party in Mauritius headed by Madan Dulloo. At the legislative elections of 3 July 2005, the party was part of the Alliance Sociale that won 42 out of 70 seats, where the MMSM won 2 seats by Madan Dulloo in constituency no. 6 and Sutyadeo Moutia in constituency no. 11. Dr Parmanund Brizmohun, who stood in constituency no. 17 for the party was not elected. On March 16, 2008, Dulloo said at a public meeting held by his party that the party was unhappy with Ramgoolam and the government's performance. The Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, responded by revoking Dulloo from his position as Foreign Minister on March 17, 2008.
